#StandingStoneSunday Here’s shot of the assembled masses on an Andy Collins walking tour of #Avebury. Andy is a top man and also expert on all things #neolithic
This scene reminds me a little of the hippy gatherings at stone circles in the Sir John Mills #Quatermass series if any of you remember that? I’m happy to say no one was harvested during Andy’s tour.

Forty people gathered around a stone at Avebury.

It is a Sunday, and fittingly we were at an actual stone circle.

This is Long Meg and a few of her"daughters", a very large circle in the Eden Valley in north Cumbria.

#StandingStoneSunday

This is Long Meg, the largest stone at the point. It is made from red sandstone and over 4m tall above the ground.A variety of large standing stones (although some have fallen) in a field. In the middle distance more stones can be seen on the opposite side of the circle.A panoramic image trying (and failing) to capture the entire circle. But maybe about 30-40 stones in the circle are visible.

I love the way this stone at Avebury appears to be looking at the dowser (not me, by the way) in this picture I took on a field trip back in 2009. It's hard not to anthropomorphise some of these guys. #StandingStoneSunday #Avebury #Pareidolia

Stanton Drew: At Stanton Drew village to the south of Bristol are the remains of several megalithic monuments, which once must have been an incredibly important centre. #StandingStoneSunday The remaining components include three large stone circles, two of which have associated avenues, and a cove. The great stone circle is the second largest in England, smaller only than the Avebury great circle. 📷 RoyReed More:

Printed hand-tinted postcard showing Long Meg and her Daughters, a stone circle near Penrith in Cumberland. Published by Valentine & Sons Ltd, Dundee & London, Valentine's Series. Not numbered. Postally unused, but is c.1905-10.

A vintage postcard showing Long Meg, a 3.6m or almost 12ft tall standing stone or menhir which lies just outside a large stone circle at Little Salkeld in Cumberland, now Cumbria. Some of the stones of the circle can be seen behind. On the other side of Long Meg are petroglyphs: a cup and ring mark, a spiral, and an incomplete concentric circle. The circle is an oval, about 100m x 93m, and has 59 of the original 70 or so stones remaining.

One of what was likely a widely-spaced setting of three meini hirion ('menhir') in Llanfairynghornwy, north Anglesey.

Two stones, which many surrounding archaeological finds suggest are from the Bronze Age, remain evident.

A tall standing stone of Bronze Age date in a wintry sunny sky. Lichen covers some of the stone, which stands in a grassy agricultural field.

At 7.5m tall, the Menir da Meada is the tallest menhir in all of Iberia. And it's been dated to 5,000BC, possibly the oldest one dated.
