#StarRaiders update: I’m an ‘Ensign’ on Novice difficulty, but a ‘Garbage Scow Captain’ on Pilot difficulty. More practice required.

I wish my photon torpedoes stopped immediately being destroyed upon coming out of hyperspace.

My first thoughts on #StarRaiders: much of it seems to be a combination of the old #StarTrek text-based strategy game (originally released 1971 for the Sigma 7 mainframe) and Atari’s 1977 arcade game Starship 1. The former supplies its strategic elements (warping around the galactic chart, replenishing at star bases, hunting down enemy ships, etc), while the first person view and combat resembles the latter. Super cool.

Farewell 1970s, and hello 1980! I made it! And what better way to greet a new decade of gaming than with Star Raiders. I hadn’t played this beloved and influential space combat game until I purchased Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration. Now that I’ve figured out how to turn on my shield (to avoid dying instantly) and completed a Novice mission, I can see how people became addicted back in the day.

I’m currently playing the #Atari5200 version.
