My very first StarWriter was StarWriter Compact 2.0 for DOS, if I remember correctly. As soon as StarWriter 2.0 for OS/2 was released, I had bought it.

@ts-new Ich seh gerade wie zufrieden ich wohl bin, seit ich #LibreOffice bzw. davor #StarOffice und OpenOffice nutze. Ach ja, das "restliche Office" wird bei mir von #Kmail, #KOrganizer & Co ergänzt, zusammen mit meiner NextCloud, auch wenn ich mein Onlinegestrüpp langsam zurückbaue.

Es funktiert einfach, zuverlässig, und schnell. Fairerweise habe ich aus o.g. Grund keine Erfahrungen mehr mit #MSOffice seit 2007. Jaja, das zeigt zwar dass ich unheimlich alt bin, aber auch, dass ich das teure Gerümpel nie wirklich gebraucht habe. Allerdings sehe ich das ja oft genug (mitz gesundem Abstand) bei Freunden und Bekannten. :smile:

Ha! Ich hab nie drauf geachtet, aber wegen dieser Unterhaltung habe ich mal geguckt... und ja: LibreOffice startet mittlerweile wirklich rasend schnell. Ich hab es nur nie bemerkt, weil es immer gut und im laufenden Betrieb zuverlässsig gelaufen ist. Einmal gestartet, brauche ich nichts mehr zu tun, bis ich abends den Rechner ohnehin wieder runtergfahren hab.

Mit dem Gedöns von #WinzigWeich war das Utopie, soweit ich mich zurückerinnern kann. :smile:

Ich empfand es auch als "Abenteuer", aber eines, auf das ich mich seinerzeit durchaus gefreut hatte: Irgendjemand im Büro hatte mir damals "Caldera Linux" auf CD mitgebracht, dazu ein erstes Buch. Und weil ich durch #StarOffice unter #Windows98 mitbekommen hatte, dass es da "so'n Linux" gibt, musste ich es unbedinngt austesten.

Ha, das war, glaub ich, 2000* oder 2001 und... es hatte alles direkt funktioniert. Selbst mein damals schon stinke-alter Okipage Windwowsdrucker tat es mit Cups auf Anhieb.

Naja, dann immer mal ne andere Distribution probiert - nicht aus Problemen heraus sondern Neugier -, aber ohne Linux war ich seit damals schon nicht mehr. Seit 2007 dann aber vorzugsweise mit SUSE bzw. #OpenSUSE unterwegs, seit 2018 auschließlich und mit Tumbleweed. Obwohl eine Rolling Release, ich bekam niemals echtes Theater damit. Allenfalls hat KMail mal gemuckt, das war am nächsten oder übernächsten Tag dann aber auch mit dem Update erledigt.

Whenever I see people talking about LIbreOffice, I think back to the early days of GNOME of AbiWord and Gnumeric.

While they didn't have all the bells and whistles of LibreOffice, they were a delight to use- fast, easy, and I'd say they were fun too.

Yes, StarOffice was functional and powerful, it was never really *fun*. While I'm glad it was freed and made into OpenOffice, then LibreOffice, I wish the simpler tools had persisted.

I can. I can imagine a world with #wordperfect, and #OpenOffice and #LibreOffice and #StarOffice and so on ... it was a good world with open standards.

But there was also a dark past, and still sometimes dubious decisions and investment.

Et comme on peut aussi en faire sur Excel, c'est une fenêtre intéressante à étudier pour se former et migrer en douceur !

J'ai découvert ça il y a peu, et il y a là, je pense, une belle opportunité à saisir pour changer les choses.

Es lebt. 🥳 Erstmal etwas gefrustet, weil weder die Festplatte noch das Floppy-Laufwerk gehen wollten. Dann erinnert, dass die Floppys mit schwarzer Blende DD/720k sind und siehe da, er bootet. Dank Spinrite dann auch rausgefunden, dass die Festplatte nicht mit den offiziell unterstützten CHS-Werten eingerichtet wurde. Typ im BIOS entsprechend geändert und schon bootet auch die Festplatte. 🙂

Offenbar wurde das Teil bis ins Jahr 2000 (!) nur als Schreibmaschine verwendet. DOS 6.00 und eine uralte Version von StarWriter Compact sind alles, was sich auf der Festplatte befindet.

Wow, I didn't realise that LibreOffice turns 40 this year with it's latest release.

It started out as closed source Star Writer for CP/M in 1985 with DOS 3.2support in 1986.

Then became Star Office in 1994 for Windows 3.1

It became open source as Open office in 2001 and the LibreOffice fork in 2010.

Got a copy of #StarOffice 3.1 that includes both the Windows and the OS/2 version. The latter is certainly going to be installed on the #IBM PS/2 76i very soon. 😀
