A lion represents the Netherlands, and an airplane above likely refers to the Allied forces. 🐍🦁⛓️‍💥🛩️

Such reliefs were placed in Amsterdam after World War II to mark the end of the war and honor the victims. The year 1945 marks the moment of liberation. 🇳🇱 🆓

An almost perfect looking marble angel… 🪽

In 2018, the “Hermitage Amsterdam” hosted ‘Classic Beauties’, an exhibition on neoclassicism. Featuring over 60 works by 25 leading artists, it explored the influence of antiquity on 18th-century art. 😍

Until 2022 it hosted exhibitions featuring art from the “Hermitage” in Saint Petersburg but eventually, the ties with Russia were severed, due to the Russian aggression in Ukraine. By fall 2023, the museum was renamed to “H’ART Museum” ♥️ 🇺🇦 🕊️

The monastery stood at the place that’s nowadays known as ‘Kloosterstraat’. It held ground from 1926 and was demolished in 1968 due to construction of highway A10 (better known as ‘Ring A10’).

The statue (from an unknown artist) was placed above the entrance of the monastery on May 5, 1946, because Duivendrecht was spared during the war. 🙏🕯️

The Green Man on a building on Lancaster Terrace in Glasgow. Representing spring and rebirth, the Green Man appears on a surprisingly large number of buildings in the city, but this is one of the best I've found so far.

Built 1511-24, wholly of granite, the hardest of stones. Exterior almost entirely decorated with carvings. This is probably the best example of how beautifully carved granite can be.

This rock south of La Rabida Hospital on Chicago’s South Side hosts some of the lakefront’s most magnificent carvings, 12 of them, all apparently from the same hand and executed between 1948 and 1953. When I first found it the rock was right at the water line, very wet and very colorful. When I returned this year it was finally well above the water, thoroughly dry and restored to its normal color. And the light was the best yet. Worth swiping to see the detail. Another piece of ancient #history for #Caturday! 😸 This #drawing (also called a #graffiti) of a #cat can be found in the #Cloisters of #SalisburyCathedral. It may have been made by a Durch prisoner of war in the late 17th century. There are several graffitis all over the #church, you can even take a tour to see them. (I didn't but stumbled across this fellow by chance)

Love the quality of the craftsmanship on this sandstone sculpture of Jesus as a child on the remains of the 1891 Pollokshields-Gelencairn Church in Glasgow. How on earth they managed to carve the folds in material quite so exquisitely, I really don't know.
