Young stork trying out their wings. Still a bit patchy, but it can't be much longer until the first flight now.
They're almost full size and the nest is very crowded.

Junior says hi. Guarding the nest while the parents are away.
The three storklings are growing up fast. They're already spreading their wings, although the flight feathers are still patchy. They clacker quietly and clean themselves and no longer soil the nest.
But they can't get their own food yet and they're getting pretty big, so both parents are extremely busy flying in delivery meals. As soon as they arrive, three black beaks start looking up at them, squeaking and pulling on the long orange beak to cough up some pre-chewed meals.
Sometimes both adults go out foraging now, as the kids are already larger than most predators, especially crows.
The only time both adults are in the nest these days is when an intruder needs seeing off, like today.

Wet stork on a sunny day? Either someone fell into the lake or they do bathe.
We had stork intruders today. A stranger came, then two, then three. Ours clackered alarm and luckily the partner was not far and returned to the nest in a hurry. Then they clackered and posed their wings together.
The three intruders circled closeby and one took a few swoops at the nest, but eventually they left and nobody was hurt.

Young #stork looks so funny when trying to stand up for the first time. 😆 🦩
Almost moved the camera fast enough.
The storks are very busy feeding all three youngsters, but they seem to be developing well.
I've learnt to tell the adults apart. One has a red beak, the other a paler orange. Also, they have preferences in their takeoff direction. One does an elegant hop from the nest into a glide low over the meadow, on a good day managing to fly half a kilometer without a single beat of their wings.
The other, depicted here, takes off towards our garden, wings beating frantically to swoop just over the powerline and then glide off towards the neighbours meadow from there.
Right over my head in this case :)

The morning routine.

Stork update! There's at least two storklings up in there. They're growing fast and make all kinds of cute squeaks now. Some sound like a frog, which I'm not sure if it's the baby storks or their food.
It took a few weeks, but now they're big enough you can sometimes see them peeking over the edge of the nest.
They clacker their little black beaks almost as loud as a big one.
Parents very busy bringing all the takeout food the kids keep ordering.
Sunset garden walk. It's rare to see these two together now. They're usually too busy hunting and bringing home food to retch up for their offspring while the other guards the nest.
Not seen any small beaks pointing skywards yet, but lots of horking up food, so there must be some hungry beaks to serve it to.
No shortage of frogs and snails after all this rain.
Meanwhile "our" storks might have younglings in there now. We don't have a good view into the nest and don't know for sure (and don't want to disturb them either), but we've seen the parents hork up food in there, which probably means there's somebody to feed now.
There's also a few sparrows that have moved into the basement of the stork nest, which is actually a really well protected place. The storks will keep any airborn predators away and the pole is hard to climb. If you can cope with the noisy upstairs dwellers.
Sad to watch. City stork is way too late to build a nest, picked an awkward location with an antenna in the middle of the nest and in the middle of a dusty used car sales lot.
Perhaps he likes the proximity to the Hesburger dumpsters, but I don't think this is going to work out.
Probably a young bird born last year. Hope he'll pick a better spot next time!
Stork thinks that rain might happen soon, so I've packed up my things for today.
Stork update! There must be eggs now, because someone is sitting in the nest all the time, head barely peeking over the edge. Smart to wait until the surprise snow and cold had passed. Apparently they also wait until at least 2 eggs have been laid.
So in about 33 days there should be young storks. Hopefully nobody gets thrown out.

Stork still improving the nest. Perhaps the last week of crappy weather has necessitated some repairs. He's nicely cleaning up the birch twigs in front of the house. Get them all!
I'm not sure if there are eggs yet. There should be, but according to the previous folks, last year they did not succeed either.
Stork 1: We navigated through the Sahara desert, dodged missiles over Gaza and drones over Ukraine for this?
Stork 2: Climate change my cloaca, it used to be warmer*
* It was not. Storks aren't good at fact checking and don't have access to historical average temperature records.
Stork stalking around the garden, carefully picking the best piece of hay for their nest. Must be expecting!
Other choice nest building materials got flown in from at least two different directions. Not easy finding quality furniture these days.
