Germany advocates for a "two-speed" European Union to boost resilience and strategic autonomy amid tensions with China.

A core group of six—Germany, France, Poland, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands—aims to move faster than the full 27-member bloc. The goals: reduce dependency on Chinese raw materials and counter global trade fragmentation. The four-point agenda:

1. Advancing The Capital Markets Union: Better financing for businesses, especially startups.

2. Strengthening The International Role Of The Euro: Promote euro as a global currency.

3. Coordinating Defence Investment: Make defence a budget priority for growth and security.

4. Securing Critical Raw Materials: Build resilient supply chains to cut reliance on China.

In short: gold gives Poland strategic optionality. It can enter the euro strong — or stay outside without being vulnerable. Gold is geopolitical insurance in monetary form.

Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney’s speech at World Economic Forum in Davos

At Davos, Mark Carney warns the rules-based order has ruptured, urges middle powers to stop pretending, build shared resilience, and wield values-based realism to confront great-power coercion.

Europe remains dangerously reliant on American arms.

Defence spending is rising, but strategic autonomy is years away.

The International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) puts the cost of replacing the American non-nuclear capabilities assigned to NATO at $226bn-344bn for new weapon systems platforms alone.

Think about it: promoting car-centric suburban sprawl and detached single-family housing to the people of a hostile nation would be surprisingly effective. Suburban sprawl spreads out more housing over more m² of road, all of which need to be maintained with a hefty bill at the taxpayer's expense. That's also true about utilities infrastructure also getting spread thin. That tax money could have instead gone towards investments in #Defense and #StrategicAutonomy.

⚠️ Europe must chart its own strategic course
Blindly following the US into escalating conflicts increases risk not security
Strategic autonomy is not anti American
It is about risk reduction diplomatic flexibility and survival
History shows that those who adapt early endure longer

The European Commission’s plan to phase out telecom equipment from high-risk countries is a necessary step to protect Europe’s critical infrastructure.

Europe already has strong and reliable domestic telecom suppliers. There is no security rationale for dependency.

Risk assessments must be consistent: the US should be evaluated by the same criteria as China — based on control, law, and strategic dependency, not alliance politics.

Europe is done being threatened. The US is making a historic mistake.
From the first tariff announcements it was clear Europe was preparing countermeasures. Washington assumed Europe would complain and comply. That assumption is wrong.
Public opinion has shifted. Hard measures are accepted, even against US Big Tech. If China could decouple, Europe can too.
The US depends on trust. That trust is fading.
This time, it’s not a bluff.
