Okay so now I'm full. Neighbour popped in to thank us for the potted lavender we left for them as a welcome to their baby (born in April). They had been staying with her parents in Mauritius for a bit because she's not been coping as well as she expected.
Anyway she brought over the cutest baby (had not seen him for a month) and the most ginormous muffins I've ever seen. I ate one of the muffins with a cup of tea (it was chocolate which husband won't eat) and now I'm completely satiated. Husband inhaled a raspberry one and he's now comatose in the loungeroom.

Exploring a few corners of Sydney local to my hotel. The view from the top of a hill in Ryde, Sydney.

The river is visible in the distance, and most of the houses, even this close to the CBD, are hidden by trees.

A flooded outdoor basketball court in a suburban park, with a hoop and light poles reflected in the still water. In the background, bare trees and a small playground hint at early spring. The image has a soft, vintage look typical of 35mm film.

Wee one had gone home to his mam this afternoon. Out of the last 10 day he was here for eight of them. So husband and I decided to celebrate with a leisurely roundabout walk with a plan to have coffee on the way back.

Well, we were almost at the cafe when we saw a big gorgeously ecstatic dog bounding up to us. We then heard a man, who we couldn't see, calling the dog back. Man came out of a house and dog eagerly started following us so we stopped and waited.
Every time the man came close to the dog, the dog sidestepped him and trotted a few feet away.
Treats were offered, sticks were thrown, but dog definitely didn't want to have his fun curtailed with his harness on so he kept galloping a short distance away excitedly waiting for the next game of catch me if you can.
Every time we moved the dog would come with us. Dog was having so much fun.
Man explained that it wasn't his dog but his son's that he was minding. Eventually husband and I sat on the grass and I was able to lasso dog with my scarf.
Man came over and put the harness on dog while I held on and dog licked my face in gratitude because we'd all had a lovely fun time together (except for poor man of course).
Man and dog turned back in the direction of the house (half a block away by this time) and husband and I continued on our way for our much deserved coffee.

Continuing to post retro shops that still exist among us.

This one is the Mitcham North Newsagency and Local Post Office (LPO) on Mitcham Road. Love the old fonts and signs.

A view of the fading light. Gold melting into deep indigo y. J the foreground is a house lit with street light. There used to be also a footpath, a car and a tree.

"We're a biodiversity hotspot, but we won't be if we cover the whole of it in suburbia."

"If you're putting roads through koala habitat, you see more car strikes.

If you're building houses in there, you get more dog attacks,

and ultimately also the more koalas are compressed, you see higher stress in the population, and that results in less resilience and greater disease."

"The science is clear. We need to [be building] up, not out. The most important thing councils can do is protect the habitat that's there and be involved in restoring areas."

Why are Americans so obsessed with their lawns, with town and city ordinances stipulating rules on length and trimming, and home owner associations dishing out fines? NOĒMA magazine looks at the history and cultural significance of these suburban staples, which are, from an ecological point of view, a waste of space.

The NSW coast - Bird-free concrete blocks surrounded by lawns

"A track takes us into a small area of regenerating coastal rainforest, where lilly pillies are growing, and the air is filled with the sounds of birds, frogs and insects. Flannery says this is an example of coastal protection done right. The forest was saved from development after a long-running campaign by traditional owners, the Dharawal people."

"We exit the beach via stairs that lead to a manicured grass area, bike path and a row of large houses. Flannery is unimpressed. Unlike at his home, there is no bird habitat and, unsurprisingly, no birds. "This is not my thing. This is just concrete blocks surrounded by grass. To my mind, it’s as boring as batshit.”
