Good evening, it's been a long day, fighting black flies and roasted by the sun. I had a sleeveless shirt on, shoulders took a hit. It's gonna sting tomorrow. #Sunburn

Today I am in the molting phase of my sunburn from Hawai'i. Just sitting over here shedding like a snake. It's only on my shoulders and upper arms, so I have peely pauldrons. (They're terribly chic. In a few months everyone in the northern hemisphere will be sporting them.)

These beach boardwalk selfies make it look like the boardwalk was empty, but it wasn’t. There were cyclists & strollers & pooches & park staff, & cops telling that guy at the next bench to turn off his music (he cursed them out to me under his breath as he passed)… So, plenty of good people watching. Coney Island definitely has more open shops than here, I admit.

The first #sunburn of this year...

@miriamrobern I live in a beach town in Oz. Every summer there is the slow game of spotting the first sunburn, then the first double sunburn, then the first triple sunburn and, sometimes, rarities like the quadruple sunburn.

Then there are thong burns (footwear, not underwear), sandal burns, baldie burns, sunnie burns (where people got burned all around their sunglasses and look like raccoons), squiggle burns and stripey burns (too-hastily applied sunblock) and sleeper burns (where people fall asleep on the beach and get one side burned) and so on... endless variation. And those are just the visible ones.

If the wildlife doesn't get you, melanoma will. Slip, slop, slap, people!

I tested positive for covid last night. After a lot of deliberating, we ultimately decided that my partner (who was scheduled to work) needed to save sick days for situations when they were either sick themselves, or when we had no alternative for childcare. I took the 3yo to an outdoor park for the day; the best place I could imagine them being if they had to be with me. I masked the entire time even though it was outdoor, was careful of our distance with others, etc.

I was literally the only person masked. Fortunately, I got no strange looks, no comments, nada about the mask. Nobody thought twice about it, which was refreshing given previous outdoor masked encounters.

I remembered to apply suncreen to us both at the start of the day. I reapplied (or more specifically, did a better job of applying) on my arms and legs a few hours in. I did not remember to re-apply to my head and face.

In case anyone is wondering - getting a sunburn on your face, with a mask on, looks exactly as goofy as it sounds. Do not recommend.
