This Aermotor windmill stands as a quiet sentinel over the ranchlands of Madeline, CA, silhouetted by the golden light of sunset. A staple of the American West, these windmills have long provided water for cattle in this rugged, remote region.

I envisioned this scene in monochrome, and a toned, quasi-sepia finish felt like the perfect homage to its vintage legacy.

Wind pump for cattle watering on a ranch just south of Madeline, California with the sinking sun behind the blades. Madeline is an unincorporated community in Lassen County, California, USA, approximately 45 miles north of Susanville on US-395. This is a very remote and rural part of northern California. The predominate industries here are cattle ranching and hay farming but there has been some mining, including gold mining in the region over the years. I had monochrome on my mind when I saw the scene and in post production I opted for a toned, quazi-sepia, look. I think it pays homage to vintage images and works well for the scene.

The trees are Q-tip shaped, that is, the branches are mostly at the top, and the lower branches are an airy lattice. The tallest is on the left of the picture, and they get slightly shorter towards the right. In front of this row is a second row of pines, much fuller and darker, with lower branches. The tallest is on the right, and the heights descend rapidly toward the middle of the photo, where the last tree is half the size of the tallest tree. Below the rows of pines, a grey adirondack chair can be seen peeking out of the tall blonde grass.
