Very proud to have contributed to the #paper led by Tamara Ben-Ari et al. from @labos1point5 analysing the ~ 130 000 #academic #travels from ~160 #research units in #France over 2019 and discussing their #carbon emissions. Most importantly, the paper reports various #mitigation strategies and quantify their potential for reducing their #CarbonFootprint.

Histograms of travel distances (right) and associated GHG emissions (left)for car (blue), train (green) and plane (red) travels from 137,081 academic travels in 159 research units in France in 2019. Box plots whiskers extends to Β±1.5x the inter-quartile range) independently for each travel modality. The insert is a zoom of the distributions of GHG emissions for cars and trains below 1500 km. Cumulative percentage of the number of trips and GHG emissions are presented as bold purple continuous lines.Mitigation potential of modal shift from plane to train as a function of distance. Vertical lines correspond to median time travel by train and rectangles express the uncertainty related to train speed, with 150 km/hΒ±60 km/h. The three numbers indicate key routes in France with 1: Paris-Toulouse, 2. Paris-Montpellier and 3. Paris-Nice, contributing respectively to 14%, 7% and 16% of total domestic GHG emission from air travel.Percentage of total (plane, train, car) travel-induced GHG reductions from single or combined options. Colors represent the intensity in GHG mitigation potential with yellow options offering the greatest potential. Each column corresponds to a specific modal shift policy, characterized by a threshold distance(and average travel time), below which a complete shift from plane to train is assumed. Modal shift options are always applied first. Each line corresponds to a specific air travel moderation policy applied at research unit scale. Moderation options are expressed in missions (equivalent to a round trip) and modal shift are considered per segment (equivalent to a one way trip). Options which correspond to actual per-capita per-year research unit median are presented at the third modality in each moderation option (i.e.,1 conference every 3yrs, 1 trip every 4 years, 5,800 km and 1 trip per yr).

Dear #train experts, I've been invited to give a keynote presentation at an international meeting this summer in Porto πŸ‡΅πŸ‡Ή .
I'm still not sure if I'm going or not, but in any case, I don't want to fly. Any suggestion for a route by train from Marseille ?

What about the #Renfe direct train from Marseille to Madrid that should start in a few months. Any news ?

#InTheTrainAgain After an intensive but very fruitfull #PLATO meeting in Prague, it’s time to take the #train back to Marseille. The first one has an awesome name and is travelling to Munich. Tomorrow morning, I will take another train to Paris and finally to Marseille.

Any resemblance to a private company launching rockets and polluting the night sky is purely coincidental - hopefully!

#InTheTrainAgain Today I’m traveling by #train to Munich and then tomorrow to Prague for a PLATO @esascience meeting (first face-to-face meeting since 2019).

I could have taken the #Ryanair direct flight, but this would have emitted 10x more CO2eq and in the context of #globalwarming and #ClimateChange, we should #StayGrounded as much as possible (πŸš… instead of ✈️).

I have a meeting next week in Prague and I planned to go by #train for #sustainability reasons. The route was quite straightforward: Marseille -> Paris -> Munich (overnight stay) -> Prague.

However, my train Paris -> Munich has been cancelled because of the #strike in ... Germany !

#PlanB: Marseille -> Karlsruhe -> Munich -> Prague 🀞

Dear #FlyingLess, #StayGrounded, #TrainAddict folks. I have to go to Prague from Marseille, arriving on March 27 morning.

What route would you take ?

I tried to book the #euronight train from the #nightjet #OBB website, but I can't. Possible connexion I found was either via Zurich, Basel, Frankfurt, Mannhein or even Paris+Wien.

#HELP !

PS: I will block anyone suggesting to take a plane !

PS2: 2 or less connexions please πŸ˜…

I just see the news that the annual #meeting of the #European #Astronomical #Society (#EAS) will be organized again as a full, in-person meeting, in spite of the fiasco from last year.

There is only one solution: #boycotting #EAS2023
