My this year's only Christmas market takes place at Skulehuset in Svartdal on Saturday, November 25th – with something extra for the little ones ...who these days may never have seen or had real money. This time to on their own buy Bowls – like those in use for food in this place in Telemark in the olden days. I will also put on a selection of bowls and plates for the adults.

In a huge wooden bowl made of birch with red decoration around the opening is a pile of smaller turned bowls and asjets. A poster stands in the background with a large twenty kroner coin in the middle with text above and below that says "Only for children - up to and including third grade - A bowl for kroner 20 - Choose yourself - one for each - Cash only

«Svartdalsgubben»
Likely a dancer, born in Svartdal this july from a old, dry and naked twig put on an oak plinth taken from a ceiling beam in a medieval building in the Dordogne renovated in the 1990ies. Acrylic blue color, Tung Oil all over.

The given name is "Svartdalsgubben». It came natural from this selfie taken "on location" when the scupture was finished. Photo: Manly face in front of the typical wooden hiltops skyline in Svartdal. The head with big blue eyes and a rough mouth over a Svartdal forested mountain range against a blue sky with some white clouds. But Svardalsgubben seems to be quite androgynous. The guy is probably a ballet dancer. Further down, the stick splits in two, with legs taking on a definite ballet dancer's pose.As a suitable foot, I found the last remnant of a roof beam from the Dordogne. I brought it to Norway when it was replaced in the mid-1990s. It was cut on an ancient sawmill many hundreds years ago. It has become both a kitchen bench and a number of other things over the years. This particular piece was so badly eaten that it was cut out and put aside. Where the wood beetles have eaten, bright blue acrylic color has been added to match the old man's eyes. Surprisingly heavy, with the ancient saw marks intact.

Springtime Logs – into Blanks
No Elm Disease around at this place…

#woodturning #bowlsFromLogs #Elm #forest #trees #woodworking #craft #handcrafted #Norway #Svartdal #harvesting #wood

The picture was taken during a session with a chainsaw on a rootstock. You are looking down at a partially split trunk from an elm tree. The safety helmet with hearing protection is seen in the background and the chainsaw barely sticks into the picture at the bottom right. Snow is still on the ground in the background and under the sawdust that has just been produced. In the foreground four finished split blanks sits on the ground where the snow has recently melted. The sun shines on the area. The endwood of the elm stock, which you can clearly see twice in the picture, has a clear and large field with dark heartwood and a smaller light field of light outer wood towards the bark. The log is first split into round blocks as long as the diameter of the log and then sawn lengthwise into two parts.

Old Farm high in the hill…

A several hundred years old pollarding elm, a really big trunk and high tree. Early springtime with no leaves. Standing close by the end wall of an old, timbered barn. On the right, against the barn, a collection of high stakes is resting.
