Uit mijn vaders archief: een keurig uitgetypt college dat hij op 22 april 1970 gaf aan de Faculteit Elektrotechniek van de TU (toen nog TH) Delft.

55 jaar geleden sprak hij deze woorden, en ze zijn nog steeds actueel.

Fragment 1: De feitelijke toestand was tot voor kort dat de technicus zich zijn verantwoordelijkheid in dezen slechts vaag bewust was. De technicus is altijd vooral de "homo ludens" geweest, hij beleefde plezier aan zijn vaardigheid, in wezen op een wijze die vaak egoïstische trekken vertoonde. In een tijdperk waarin misbruik van de techniek catastrofaal gaat worden mag de technicus in deze houding niet volharden. Zijn verantwoordelijkheid in dezen zal hij zich bewust moeten worden. In overeenstemming met deze gedachte zal het technische onderwijs moeten voorgaan in deze bewustmaking. Gelukkig begint dit besef te leven, met name ook in onze Afdeling, die op dit punt een beginselverklaring heeft aanvaard, waar men nog niet overal aan toe is. Omdat u niet allen op de hoogte zult zijn met de tekst, moge ik deze hier citeren:

Fragment 2: 'De centrale plaats van de techniek in de huidige samenleving leidt ertoe dat de ontwikkeling van het technisch kunnen en handelen van doorslaggevende betekenis is voor de evolutie van de maatschappijstructuur. Dit gegeven legt een grote mate van maatschappelijke verantwoordelijkheid in de handen van de beoefenaren van de technische wetenschappen. Waar de ingenieur in de beoefening van deze wetenschappen een centrale plaats inneemt, ligt het op de weg van een instituut dat zich de vorming van ingenieurs tot doel stelt en dat, mede in verband met deze onderwijstaak, actief bijdraagt tot de verdere ontplooiing van de technische wetenschappen, in de opleiding bewust aandacht te schenken aan de ver-reikende maatschappelijke implicaties van het technisch kunnen en handelen.'
