After, and before, the Elwah Dam was removed scientist worked closely together with the indigenous tribes; to study and restore the natural environment. Fighting extinction and giving Mother Nature a chance to revive itself, and therefor restoring a way of life.
In those ten years some unsuspected things happened, icreasing the awe of nature itself.

The Elwha’s revival is encouraging advocates to push for the removal of many larger dams in the region, and in the rest of the world.

Not a Sahara desert, but abcent of life, unable to nurture a biodiverse life. But caused by an all to common culprit: extensive grazing of life stock. Eating whatever is left, and when that is gone grazed by a less particular stock... until it's dead.. So a desert.
What needs to be done to bring life back ? Because that's possible !
Firstly, stop the grazing. Cattle favours the sprouts [life beginnings] before it grows.
Secondly, retain water in the area. By artficial but natural means and by disrupt the man made drainage put there over the centuries.
And this is not about blaming farmers. It's about land management, and that's where farmer should [get to] play an important crucial role.
Since Britain left the EU the UK government has been rethinking farming and the incentives which they pay farmers and they've come up with ELMS [Environmental Land Management]. Farmers will be incentivized [they will be paid] to not only produce food but manage the land as well.

I said it before: you need a good plan, persistence and political leadership.
It's a percieved 'political' risk that turns out to be beneficial, lucrative and successful.
Don't keep debating 'the issue' Get on with it. When it's done every one will be happy.

The plan was the 'circulation plan'
* Ban cars to cross from one section to another. When they need to they have to take the ringroad
* Create a high quality bicycle path network.
* Improve public transport Bring back the river.
* Eliminate [reduce drastically] car parking and promote car sharing and rental

Don't merily immitate but LEARN from the good examples.
It's all about improving the surroundings.

"The Innovative Way Ghent, Belgium Removed Cars From The City" [10:50 min]
by Streetfilms

youtube.com/watch?v=sEOA_Tcq2X

Quote by sf:
"Jan 2, 2020
A MUST MUST WATCH FOR TRANSPORTATION LOVERS!
Witness the transformation of Ghent, Belgium, who instituted the Traffic Circulation Plan in April 2017, which completely changed the way nearly every resident gets around the city and has inspired unheard of mode shifts. It encourages less car use, more bicycling and more transit use by splitting the city into seven distinct zones: a mostly car-free city center core surrounded by six zones which have been cordoned off with concrete or controlled by cameras. The only way to reach them is to travel to the ring road on the city outskirts, thus making it not impossible to use a car but motivates those shorter trips to be done via human power or mass transit. Bike mode share in 2012 was 22%, now it is 35% and growing!
This swift, creative strategy of turning Ghent in to a place for people is such a phenomenal story it's a mystery as to why it has not gotten more attention worldwide. It is a city of 262,000 residents, so not a large metropolis, but not a small city either. The metamorphosis was achieved thru a sort of tactical urbanism approach by throwing concrete barriers and planters here and there (some backed by enforcement cameras) and altering the gateways into public spaces and safer places to walk and bike. (There are now 40% fewer cars on bicycle priority streets than before the plan!)
Their main inspirations were the cities of Groningen and Utrecht, both in The Netherlands. And as Vice Mayor, Filip Watteeuw explains they did not have the funds or the time to spend 10, 20 or 30 years to catch up to where they were. So they improvised with interesting tactics and treatments and The Traffic Circulation Plan. And as I have said before what happened was stunning: almost never has their been such a rapid metamorphosis occurred in such a short time. And Ghent isn't stopping there.
Ghent was a fabulous city for many reasons. I highly recommend a visit. It is quiet and lovely and nearly everywhere is attainable by multiple modes of transportation. You can even use a car if you like - but just remember it is a little more complicated.

881 #ClimateDebate #OnCars [5] #RoadDesign #Bollards

What is a typical difference in regulations between US and EU. in the US bollards are designed to limit the damage or safety to the car...
whereas in the EU bollard are designed to stop the car by any means in order to protect the pedestrian.
Now what does this mean ? Yeah the car has a pedastal of its own in the US. Whatever...
But it also means that there's no perception of safety [in the US] unless boxed in a very expensive box on wheels. Resulting in ever less people in the streets. A dead zone with super fast private traffic whizzing through.
The, EU, alternative has lots more safety in the streets, both for cars and other road users. Resulting in a lot more foot traffic, less accidents / death, better air, more commerce and more happines
Now what's to be done ? Turn that bollard principle upside down. Don't prioritize driver safety but put road safety first. The car driver may best be inconvenienced by some things if the safety of all is improved. In most of the EU, but especilly in the Netherlands this has been the practice for over 75 yrs and it's bloody wll working.
How can that be achieved ? First and formost: NO QUICK SOLUTIONS for a foto opp, no paint. What you need is a firm policy in sticking to it. You'll need a well thought plan and no deviations [unless it's an improvement] and no 'turning sround' on the principles. In most cases it needs a determined mayor [or national policy] with a solid democratic mandate.
Will there be friction ? Of course there will be. Not everyone will see the benefits, unless they're finally there. In a horse driven country the train was seen as an existensional threat, so were cars.
My point is: things need to change, and not everybody will like it [at first]

And please remember the commitments of this debate as stated in Debate #OnCars [1] from yesterday.

1. Cars are central to American culture because they provide freedom [1:31]
2. Car culture is dying because of government [3:39]
3. Government and environmentalists hate personal freedom, and want you out of the car [5:09]
4. Instead of government enforcing fuel efficiency, it should have been left up to free market
5. Urban planners are building bike lanes, reducing parking spots, and investing in public transit, and this is a bad thing [9:25]
6. Despite government meddling, low gas prices encourage people to drive more, and buy bigger vehicles, and this is a good thing [12:43]
7. Car ownerships builds cohesion, brings the country closer together. [13:58]

If you always drive, or get driven, you shouldn't be qualified to make those decisions. You have no real perspective on the problem. You're NOT an expert.

Take me: I DO hate cars with good personal reason: they take away my breath. They use too much valuable space. They kill... ah you get it.
And I get you: You need a car where you live [rural USA], to get anywhere, to work. You love driving.

First commitment: nothing has to change right away [this minute] BUT things will have to change [next month]
Second commitment: your opinion doesn't matter [for once] , it's about suggesting solutions. About thinking things through before screaming stupidity.

Now viewer of this video...
would you please contribute to all-encompassing and/or comprehensive solutions, bearing in mind those two commitments.

[Stupid may not be the right word. Monomind would be better. Like thinking EV's are it, or Mars. The combination with capitalistic greed makes it real stupid.]
Of course labor unions are not going to offer a solution, they're too conservative.
[In the sense that protecting jobs may not be as important as survival. e.g.: Coal has to go so don't protect the jobs but the miners [re-education for instance]. Don't get me wrong ! Unions are a very important part of the solution as is #Equity is a part of the solution.

We thought it was about time to scale up our marine rewilding efforts which is why we have decided to build our very own kelp factory! Together with Seaforester and IPL we are embarking on a journey to build a kelp nursery and test an innovative restoration technique at scale."

🔎 ABOUT THIS PROJECT
Since 2020 we have been working with SeaForester to restore kelp forests in Portugal. These underwater forests are astonishing havens for marine life which also improve water quality and sequester carbon. Unfortunately, large areas of kelp have disappeared from the coast of Portugal but reverting this trend has been difficult. One of the challenges is that restoration efforts tend to require extensive diving which quickly becomes costly and time-consuming. A new technique called “green gravel” has been developed to address this challenge and make large scale marine reforestation possible. It involves growing kelp attached to pebbles in a lab before deploying them at suitable locations in the ocean. For this project, we are building a kelp nursery that will allow us to test this method on a larger scale.
