From Hunter Walker at #TalkingPointsMemo:

"... As Black activists in South Africa fought against their country’s racist apartheid government decades ago, some on the American right felt they took it too far. One of those people who stepped up and spoke out against their fight was L. Brent Bozell III, the right-wing activist that President Trump tapped this week to serve as America’s ambassador to South Africa ..."

From Josh Kovensky at #TalkingPointsMemo:

"... I trawled through court filings and listened to judges and attorneys pick over the legal wreckage left by the removals. What emerged was a clear and deeply alarming picture: The Trump administration commenced orchestrating the removals long before Trump invoked the Alien Enemies Act, and did so in a way that seems to have been designed to evade judicial oversight ..."

The #Trump #WhiteHouse has taken its attempt to seize direct control over the entire #ExecutiveBranch to a new level and laid out a startling legal rationale for the move in a previously unreported email obtained by #TPM. If successful, Trump would be making a dramatic end run around the #Senate’s #AdviceAndConsent power for certain appointed positions.

I don't agree with Josh Marshall all of the time, but he's usually level-headed and pragmatic about whatever is happening. His newsletter today reflects what we're seeing with polls and other indicators: most Americans don't agree with what Musk and Trump are doing, and even MAGAts are upset. We're starting to see cracks in the congressional GOP ranks - as much as i despise them for allowing things to get this far, we need them to fight back. And since it looks like even average Americans and corporate media are "joining the battle" (as Marshall writes), I am feeling a little more hopeful today. We're still at the start of a long slog, absolutely, and nothing is definite, but I have to believe once Musk/Trump's actions are made clear to the average American (i.e., they can't ignore it by only watching Fox), things are going to get very interesting, volatile, and possibly violent. Anyway, worth a read!

I saw this post on #TalkingPointsMemo today that I wanted to share:

You are made, fundamentally, from the good.
With this knowledge, you never march alone.

You are the breaking news of the century.
You are the good who has come forward

Through it all, even if so many days
Feel otherwise.

All in service to a simple idea:

That we can make a house called tomorrow.
What we bring, finally, into the new day, every day,

Reading List For The Moment We’re In

These are difficult, stressful, head spinning times. What’s happening politically is not only wrong and dangerous, it is made more so because it is increasingly difficult to know where to turn to find good information. Now that the ā€œMain Stream Media,ā€ previously derided by those now in power, has capitulated and chosen a different main stream to drown in, I imagine that challenge will only continue.

It’s challenging to keep up with the pace of events and some ask why bother trying given that those we’ve relied on in the past have either turned coats or can’t keep up themselves. My answer is simple. I’d like to know more about the disease is causing me pain.

As is my habit, I follow a lot of sources. I’ve compiled and will continue to compile a list of those I find the most valuable. Some on this list cover news, some provide important context, and all are worth my while in my opinion. So, I’m sharing them here.

I’ll add to this list as I discover other sources worth recommending, so you might want to check back every now and then.

Mostly on a political front, Josh Marshall’s Talking Point Memo has always been an excellent source. It’s even more so now.

Mark Jacob covers not only the politics but those that cover the politics in Stop The Presses.

ProPublica has been a go to source for me for a while and it should be for you as well. Their investigations provide important context, but it is not a breaking news source.

Rolling Stone’s political coverage is solid reporting and solid context within this overwhelming pace of events.

The Tennessee Holler certainly covers the things going on in Tennessee as it competes to be ranked below Mississippi in most category measurements for success, but also is providing some excellent coverage and commentary on the larger U.S. picture.

Given that tech is now incestuously intertwined with our politics and governance, I highly recommend for recent, and I hope ongoing, coverage Wired, TechDirt and 404Media. Reporters from those publications are doing excellent work and it’s a good way to filter through some of the nonsense.

Feel free to leave a comment if you have a good source you’d like me to include. Feel free to refrain from offering sources such as The Washington Post, The New York Times, and others crossing the River Styx.

You can find more of my writings on a variety of topics on Medium at this link, including in the publications Ellemeno and Rome. I can also be found on social media under my name as above.

I tend to write my Congressional reps (all Democrats) a lot but haven't since before the elections. Today I did. Here it is.

@mttaggart Let's not forget Dem Whitehouse, who may vote to confirm RFK Jr. due to their 'long friendship'.

Rhode Island may want to reconsider the someone whose unrepentant 'friend' is responsible for the deaths of 83 people on Samoa, many of them children.

Earlier administrations had at least a thin veneer of following norms—the First Felon's inauguration is now an open bar for criminals—it’s all pay-to-play, baby!

If Tim Cook doesn’t want tariffs on his iPhones, he’d better pony up cash for the First Felon’s ā€˜library’ fund.

The First Felon will take in several billion dollars in donations during his ā€˜presidency’—they’re going to make post-Soviet Russia look like a church lady bake sale.

After the two violent incidents ringing in the new year, the First Felon Elect wasted no time in getting facts wrong - it's more important that he feel validated.

But this was also under-reported, the the veteran who took his own life outside a trump property left a violent anti-Democratic manifesto that's not being reported on, because apparently, only scary brown people carry out terrorist attacks.

I'm sharing this Josh Marshall Editorial. Any Dem not on board with this pardon can fuck right off and join the republicans.

Any republicans having a problem with this pardon can join weak Dems in fucking right off - they're bad faith actors who have not been honest in the past 9 years (if ever).

I listened to this podcast today: talkingpointsmemo.com/podcasts

I always enjoy these because while Josh Marshall is a realist, he also talks about how optimism as a way of life rather than some sort of pollyannish/Mary Baker Eddy, "I'm just going to be positive and everything will be great" mentality, but rather it raises the possibilities for better outcomes.

It's also better for your mental health—we all have to pull together to win this.

Talking Points Memo is collecting campaign texts. If you want to help their analysis, this is what they're looking for:

"I’m particularly interested in ones that are putting nuggets of news in front of you to, in theory, drive your vote for one or the other candidate. If you’re getting these and haven’t requested they stop, I’m very interested to see them."
