"Forestry Corporation NSW sentenced for felling hollow-bearing trees in Mogo State Forest. FCNSW was fined $20,000 and ordered to pay more than $84,000 in legal costs to the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA)."

FCNSW "was also ordered to widely publicise the judgement on its social media accounts and through a paid advertisement in the local newspaper and the Sydney Morning Herald within 60 days of the judgement."

"Under the Coastal Integrated Forestry Operations Approval (CIFOA), the state-owned timber corporation responsible for managing more than 2 million hectares of public land is required to retain any hollow-bearing trees during harvesting operations. Such hollows typically form in trees more than 150 years old."

"Hollow bearings are protected in NSW legislation because they take so long to form, and more than 300 Australian native species rely on them for shelter.

Forestry Corp cops $500,000 penalty for illegal logging

"This arrangement stems from an incident involving the confirmed illegal harvesting of 17 protected trees in Coopernook State Forest on the NSW mid-North Coast."

NSW forestry agency given another stop work order after EPA identifies endangered greater glider habitat

EPA EXTENDS STOP WORK ORDER IN TALLAGANDA STATE FOREST

"An initial Stop Work Order was issued to FCNSW by the EPA on 30 August 2023. Since then, the EPA has recorded 89 endangered Southern Greater Gliders and 20 den trees in areas subject to the Stop Work Order. Those areas had been earmarked for harvesting or planned harvesting operations."
"The Stop Work Order requires FCNSW to continue to cease all harvesting, haulage operations, and any road and track construction work in the areas of concern in the Tallaganda State Forest."
EPA located "a deceased Southern Greater Glider around 50 metres from forestry harvest operations. It is not known how the glider died."

NSW forestry agency ordered to stop logging after greater glider found dead

"The state-owned New South Wales forestry agency has been ordered to immediately stop logging in parts of a state forest after the Environment Protection Authority found a dead greater glider – an endangered species – nearby."

"The greater glider is Australia’s largest gliding marsupial, with bodies up to 45cm long and furry, prehensile tails that extend another 60cm. It was listed as endangered in 2022 after losing significant parts of its habitat to bushfire, drought, land-clearing and logging. Scientists estimate its population has fallen by about 80% in 20 years in some areas."
