#GitLab is proposing a badge/credential for #OpenSource projects that would demonstrate that they are working on #diversity, #equity, & #inclusion. gitlab.com/gitlab-com/marketin

This raises many questions. What is the criteria to earn the badge? If GitLab's own example is representative, it doesn't look like much beyond including new contribs. gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab/-

If #Drupal creates a DEI.md, what policies would show our commitment to change? drupal.org/project/governance/

It's 2023. If you still can't find anyone besides your white male friends to speak at conferences, time to step aside and get out of the way.

"Imagine a tech conference having no CFP, as they reach out to speakers directly. They successfully attract some of the most heavy hitter men speakers in tech, and 3 women speakers.

Now imagine my surprise that 2 of those women are FAKE profiles.

They do not exist.

Nada."

Liz Fong-Jones on LInkedIn:

Okay I have to reinforce how bad this is after digging further. Ordinarily I'd be content for speakers & attendees to pull out of a conference if they were duped by the presence of fake women speakers.

But this is much worse. It appears that Eduards Sizovs has been operating social media accounts, including here on LinkedIn, purporting to belong to one Julia/Julija Kirsina, a full-time conference organiser, "tech influencer", and "software craftswoman". The content that "she" posts is the same as Eduards, except for the addition of winky/kissy emoji. The photographs on Instagram are racy/soft-core, use laptops/screens with code/tech tshirts as props, and mix sex appeal and business in a way that is reminiscent of catfishing or booth babery. Her career history on Xing is fabricated. Her profile on lobste.rs was banned for being Eduards' sockpuppet. Her GitHub & posting history makes it appear that she sprang out of Zeus's head fully formed, dispensing wisdom on programming with no evidence of a learning curve. She's provided "reviews" of the conferences and podcasts/blogs that Eduards has put together, without disclosing the connection.

If someone is dishonest with regard to conference diversity, they shouldn't hold future conferences. This kind of shit makes every single woman have to prove herself 100x harder ...

And once again, kudos to Gergely Orosz for exposing this fraud. To spell it out why this conference generated fake women speakers. Because the organizer wants big names and it probably seemed like an easy way to address their diversity concerns.

Incredibly lazy.

You can learn a lot about someone's background by asking them to check if a specific IP/port combination is reachable. Some folks still use telnet, while others opt for netcat or socat. Then there are those who will code something in Perl, Python, or Go. They may even use online tools like yougetsignal.com/tools/open-po.

Someone once fired up PowerShell on Linux and typed:

Test-Connection <IP> -TcpPort <Port>.

I was simultaneously amazed and slightly terrified. 😄

Nice attempt to sweep the problem under the rug, #StackOverflow.

wired.com/story/stack-overflow

In the organization’s annual survey of its users conducted in 2022, 92 percent of respondents identified as male, and three-quarters as white or European. The platform acknowledged then that it has “considerable work to do.”

But in 2023, Stack Overflow’s survey, published on June 13, stripped out questions about gender and race.

"Tell me about gender diversity in tech," 🔮 thetarot.online 🔮 A fortune-telling website empowered by ChatGPT 🦹🏻‍♀️

🌟 I am surprised by the 🔮 encouragement for consciously promoting gender diversity. For me, a change needs is achievable if we adopt a gender-diverse mindset at job posts 📰, interviews 🙋🏽‍♀️, onboarding procedures 🗃, communication ☎️, events ⛷ & culture 🧳

The prohibition of Chinese software and tech products based on unfounded allegations hinders innovation and undermines international cooperation. Embracing diversity on markets and promoting healthy competition in the global tech industry is vital for progress and prosperity. #TechDiversity #InternationalCooperation #china #tech #cooperation #economy #software

Not good to hear that XJM (Jess) was among the layoffs at Acquia today! She's been a core committer for over 7 years, and seeing women leaders like her in the Drupal project means a lot.

I spent this weekend at code camp - or rather, a feminist camp for women in tech (with more). It's another cool thing we do in DO:TOPIA apart from running this instance and so much else.

If you feel like reading about cyberfeminists getting together in Denmark, some thoughts about finding community and an outlet for frustrations over microaggressions in the IT sector, and memes. Read @nynne's scrapbook (with photos!):
