Hey everyone, Yuri here ๐Ÿ‘‹

๐Ÿš€๐Ÿ“‚ Just published my personal GitHub repository!

Hey everyone! I'm starting my journey as a data analyst/developer and decided to create a simple repository to introduce myself and share what Iโ€™m working on.

๐Ÿ”— Repo: github.com/YuriEverton/Yuri-Ev

Itโ€™s a markdown-based portfolio where I talk a bit about who I am, what Iโ€™m learning, and where Iโ€™m heading. Iโ€™ll be updating it with projects, experiments, and learning notes.

๐Ÿ› ๏ธ Built with free and open tools, and focused on staying clean and minimal.

Feel free to check it out, leave feedback, or drop a โญ if you like it. Every bit of support helps!

Setting up a development machine often feels like a one-off task, but for those of us working with multiple systems, achieving consistency is crucial. My journey has been a continuous quest for a workflow that delivers reliable, repeatable results every time.

My path involved iterating through solutions like vim-manager and dotfiles for initial consistency. Later, exploring tools like Snap and home-manager showed immense promise, with home-manager offering robust idempotency for seamless upgrades, while Snap, despite its benefits, presented unique integration challenges, such as the ibus issue.

However, the journey wasn't just about finding existing tools. When facing a specific installation challenge for Firefox Developer Edition, I discovered Ubuntu Make. Recognizing a flaw in its website-dependent patching, I was able to contribute a handful of patches for tools I rely on daily. It's incredibly rewarding to contribute to projects that enhance our collective experience.

Ultimately, consistent software installation remains a complex matter, with every strategy offering unique pros and cons. The best solution often proves to be a thoughtful combination of approaches. I'm always open to new project collaborations and job opportunities. Feel free to connect with me on LinkedIn or here on Medium.

๐Ÿ”Œ๐Ÿ’ฅ "Infinite Grid of Resistors" โ€” An electrifying journey where the only resistance you'll find is from ModSecurity's ironclad error messages. Apparently, the real challenge isn't in the physics, but in finding the elusive resource on the server. ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ๐Ÿ”

Day 1 of posting to social media until I get an offensive security research job

First, Iโ€™m going to start with what I know โ€“ Windows. I need to recreate what I had access to at Microsoft, so that starts by setting up a dev environment and finding a copy of Windows System Internals, perhaps the greatest resource for learning Windows out there. My expertise is in Windows and virtualization, so Iโ€™m going to make sure I master those areas.

Next, I donโ€™t think I want to grind coding exercises, but I do need to shake the rust off my coding skills. I think Iโ€™m going to start with some HackTheBox challenges and find some CTFs to participate in.

Finally, my long overdue goal: learn Rust. Iโ€™m not sure if this will help immediately, as I could choose to improve my knowledge of Python. But Rust was getting more and more popular in the areas of Windows I was tasked with protecting, so I need to learn what all the fuss is about with regards to memory safety.

If anyone is on a similar journey, letโ€™s hold each other accountable in the comments! I will be sure to document any write-ups at blog.maxrenke.com (work in progress).

1 year of linux ๐Ÿ–ฅ๏ธ
Iโ€™m 37 and have been using Linux for a year now after wasting the rest on Windows. I started reflecting on older Windows versions and how it used to be and realized I hate it. I also hate coding and thought I needed some background knowledge to start Linux. Turns out, I was wrong! I've learned more in this year than in all my years with Windows. Just wanted to share my experience!๐Ÿ–ฅ๏ธ

2025-04-23

Going live on the vBrownBag series today to share something a little different: my story.

Scared but Learning is about how I got into tech at nearly 40, with no CS background, and how Iโ€™ve grown in the 6 years since.

Itโ€™s personal, honest, and maybe useful too.

๐Ÿ”ฅ Finally fixed a long-standing issue in my LiveBuild setup! ๐Ÿ”ฅ

For months, start-stop-daemon and dpkg-divert were throwing warnings during the build, suggesting --no-rename. After countless tests, the fix was simpler than expected: an appropriate hook in LiveBuild did the trick!

Lesson learned: sometimes the solution is right in front of us! ๐Ÿ› ๏ธ
