Pakistan is set to launch 5G services by July-August 2024, according to Dr Umar Saif, the Caretaker Federal Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunication. The government plans to auction 300MHz of spectrum before the 5G launch.
However, before the launch, the optic fibre network in Pakistan needs to be extended. Currently, only 6,000 mobile towers out of approximately 56,000 towers across the country are connected to optic fibre cables. The minister highlighted the government's efforts to uplift the IT industry, including the establishment of a telecom tribunal. Additionally, initiatives to boost the export of smartphones and encourage local manufacturing are underway.
