In late summer, young Elegant Terns (Thalasseus elegans) trail their parents on fishing trips, quietly following until a fish is caught—then breaking into loud begging calls. They often drop to the water’s surface to receive their meal before taking off again. Along the California coast, this parent-chick routine can continue well into November.

🌎 Inca Tern (Larosterna inca)

The Inca Tern is a striking seabird, easily identified by its dark grey body, white moustache-like feathers, and vibrant red-orange beak and feet. They are found along the Pacific coast of South America, ranging from Peru to central Chile. These birds are highly social, often forming large breeding colonies on rocky cliffs and islands. They feed on small fish, frequently diving into the water to catch their prey. No subspecies are recognised. 2.5 Flash (Edited)

Conservation status: Near Threatened (IUCN 3.1)

Fun fact: Inca Terns are known for their loud, high-pitched calls that many compare to a cat's meow.

Good morning. 🌊🌊🌊

14 August 2025

You know, I’m not pro-tattoo, though I’ve got a small one on my hand that I put there when I was about sixteen. I chalk that up as a lesson learned and never went back for another. During my Marine days, when all my buddies were getting Bulldogs inked on their forearms, I passed. Don’t get me wrong—I wasn’t the brightest bulb in the pack back then, but there was at least a dim glow. I’d started thinking about long-term consequences. These days, though, the tattoo industry’s booming. Folks get ink hoping it’ll make them look better, but tattoos don’t really do that—they just draw attention to whatever equipment you’re already working with. To each their own, of course. But if you’re thinking about getting one, take a moment and think it through. And remember: No Regerts.

“Getting a tattoo should never be a light decision. They are going to be part of your body forever.” — K.A. Albury

"A quiet stretch of Gulf Coast shoreline unfolds beneath a soft, overcast sky. The wet sand glistens like polished stone, reflecting the pale light and the silhouettes of seabirds gathered in loose formation. A mixed flock—mostly gulls and terns—stands at the edge where land meets sea, their slender legs half-submerged in the shallow surf. Some birds wade with purpose, others linger in stillness, heads tilted as if listening to the hush of the waves.

The ocean behind them rolls in gentle rhythm, its waves small and foamy, brushing the shore with a whisper rather than a roar. The horizon is low and open, giving the scene a sense of spaciousness and calm. There’s no clutter, no human presence—just the birds, the water, and the quiet choreography of nature. The image feels like a pause in time, a moment of peace held between tides.

In the bottom left corner, the credit “Swede’s Photographs” is subtly inscribed, anchoring the image with a personal touch." - Copilot

Where the Gulls Gather

This photograph was taken at Holly Beach, Louisiana, along the Gulf of Mexico. The upper two-thirds of the frame is awash in blue-tinted ocean, while the lower edge meets a stretch of brown, wave-worn sand. Swells roll in toward the shore, cresting into foamy white waves that spill over and leave behind scattered tide pools. On the beach, a gathering of roughly 40 shorebirds congregates at the water’s edge. Among them are various species—gulls, terns, sanderlings, and a few I couldn’t identify. Most stand quietly along the surf, but a handful lift into the air, winging low over their companions.

My photo gallery features over 1300 carefully selected images. While most are chosen for their visual appeal, a few stand out as novelty shots. Feel free to explore my gallery at:

"A gentle hush seems to settle over the beach where dozens of shorebirds—mostly gulls and terns—have gathered in a loose, shifting congregation. They stand scattered like pearly-white commas against the wet, reflective sand, some puffed up like little sentinels, others restlessly sidestepping the incoming waves. A few take to the air, wings slicing the blue like calligraphy, their arcs mirrored below in the shimmering shoreline. The ocean stretches beyond them, dusky teal and endless, capped with lace-like crests of foam. Above, the sky holds a clean, expansive blue—cool, quiet, and cloudless—making every bird’s movement feel like choreography against a vast stage. There’s no hurry here. Just the rhythmic hush of the tide, the soft shuffle of feathered feet, and the quiet communion of sea and sky." - Copilot

Good morning. đŸ˜”â€đŸ’«đŸ«˜â˜•

3 June 2025

I’m still feeling a little spacey from waking up—do you ever get like that in the mornings? That detached, uncoordinated haze where your head hums with unthoughts. It takes a while to shake off, but coffee is supposed to help
or is it? Honestly, I don’t even know. I just assumed. Too much coffee might just bring the jitters, which, now that I think about it, isn’t all that different. Maybe a good walk would do the trick, get the blood moving—but I’m not walking today. đŸ€” Well, I am, but not like that. Instead, I’ll step out back into the cool air, watch the birds for a while, let them pull me back to reality. But first, the feeders—fill them, and they will come.

"I’m not absent-minded. It’s just that I’m present in another dimension." – Arthur C. Clarke

Waves and Wings

"This image captures a peaceful moment at the beach, where a group of seabirds gathers along the shore. Waves roll in the background, adding movement to the otherwise serene scene. The birds, including gulls and terns, stand in the shallow waters and on the wet sand, seemingly absorbed in their coastal surroundings. There's a quiet harmony between the natural elements—the ocean, sky, and birds—making it a beautiful seaside snapshot." - Copilot

Looking Out to Sea

A couple of years ago, I captured this image of five royal terns (Thalasseus maximus) gazing out over the sea at Holly Beach, Louisiana, along the Gulf of Mexico. If you look closely beneath the terns on the far left, you can spot the tiny black legs of a much smaller bird—possibly a sanderling—hidden just beneath them.

"Five elegant royal terns stand on a stretch of sandy beach, their slender figures poised against the backdrop of a gently rolling sea. Their white plumage contrasts with the black caps adorning their heads, like neatly placed crowns. Their sharp, vivid orange beaks are striking, glowing like embers in the soft daylight. Their wings rest smoothly against their bodies, giving them an air of stillness, as though caught in a moment of contemplation.

The waves behind them churn in quiet rhythm, their foamy edges kissing the shore with a soft whisper. The horizon blurs into a delicate haze, stretching endlessly beyond them. The birds stand in a loose yet deliberate line, unified in their gaze toward the water, as if drawn by some unseen force of the ocean. Whether waiting for a shift in the tide or simply surveying their kingdom, their presence radiates grace and quiet dignity.

The entire scene feels serene, capturing a timeless moment in nature—one of harmony between land, sea, and sky." - Copilot

Ocean Breeze

This serene beach scene captures Holly Beach, Louisiana, nestled along the Gulf of Mexico. I last visited a couple of years ago, and the thought of returning has been on my mind ever since. Scattered along the shore are various gulls and terns, accompanied by lively sanderlings darting between the waves. While these birds add movement and charm to the scene, my true focus was the vast, rolling expanse of the gulf—an ever-changing, mesmerizing backdrop.

"Imagine standing on a peaceful beach, where the soft, light-colored sand stretches before you, touched by the gentle embrace of small rolling waves. The sky is brilliantly clear, casting an open, welcoming expanse above. Along the shore, seagulls gather—a mixture of restless motion and quiet observation. Some glide gracefully overhead, their wings slicing through the air as they ride the ocean breeze. Others remain on the sand, their slender legs carrying them in short bursts of movement as they search for morsels. The scene is filled with the sound of the waves mingling with the birds’ calls, creating a soothing coastal harmony. The untouched beauty of nature unfolds effortlessly, inviting reflection and calm." - Copilot
