The former "Smith's Arms" pub, now closed, at the village of Godmanstone, Dorset, England. May 2025. The river Cerne flows alongside. It was supposed to be the smallest pub in England, seating around 24 persons. The thatched building dates from 1420 and it was originally a blacksmith premises. A local legend says that when king Charles II stopped to get his horse shod, he asked for a drink whilst waiting, and the blacksmith replied that he lacked a license to sell alcohol. So the king granted him such a license by Royal Charter and thus received an ale!

The birthplace in 1840, of the English novelist and poet Thomas Hardy, at Upper Bockhampton, Dorset, England. It has three bedrooms upstairs, and in one of these bedrooms, he wrote his early novels including "Under the Greenwood Tree" and "Far from the madding crowd". Today the National Trust manages the cottage in its idyllic setting. May 2025.

Thatching uses the rain’s angle of descent against it. The material isn’t in itself waterproof, but it guides the drops from the roof’s surface to the ground. It’s gravity judo. I watched the thatch going up on this row of cottages. It was weirdly restful.

Hier sieht Mensch von Links nach Rechts auf Reet liegend, einen kleinen blauen Akkuschrauber mit extralangem Bithalter (60cm) die Schrauben mit Edelstahldraht zum festnähen des Reets, ein rotes Pappmesser, den Reetklopfer auf dem Rücken, eine Aluplatte ca. 15cm breit und 30cm lang mit versenkten 2cm Löchern in einem Muster in alternierenden Reihen, mit Holzgriff, die Griffe von zwei traditionelle Reetnähnadeln und unter dem Klopfer eine Spule mit Edelstahldraht.

So jetzt endlich das Werkzeug.
Auf diesen zwei Fotos seht ihr einen Reetstuhl. Das ist eine kleine Leiter die durch das Reet gesteckt wird und mit den Zinken in die Dachlatten Einhakt mit mehreren dieser Stühle kann mensch sich dann über das Reetdach bewegen.

Ein Reetstuhl der mit den Spitzen leicht ins Reet gesteckt ist. Das ist eine kleine viersprossige Leiter mit zwei Zinken, die durchs Reet gestochen werden. Die zweite Sprosse ist etwas dreimal so tief. Die mittleren Sprossen sind mit Blech aus einer Waschmaschinentrommel beschlagen, um auch bei Nässe sicheren Tritt zu gewährleisten.

Ein Reetstuhl in Seitenansicht, vor einem Stück Reetdach hinter dem Stuhl liegen Schrauben die mit einem ca 50cm langen doppelten Edelstahldraht versehen sind. Mensch sieht besonders gut den Zinken der durchs Reet gestochen wird um auf den Dachlatten zu halten. Der Zinken ist blau angemalt, die Farbe unseres Reetdachdeckers, mit der er sein Werkzeug markiert. Links sieht man die mit strukturiertem Blech beschlagenen Sprossen.

Wollte nur Mal paar Eindrücke vom Reetdachdecken in einen Tröt verpacken. Was vllt. ein paar Menschen hier interessiert.
