I think Jennifer Egan was already one of my top 5 (at least) favourite authors of all time, but "The Candy House" is just breathtakingly brilliant. The imagination behind this book is amazing - it's madly inventive, surprising, covering a huge breadth of experiences, but most of all it's enormous fun.
This highlighted sentence relates to the music business, but of course is not limited to it.

We contemplated a nationwide billboard campaign to remind people of that eternal law, Nothing is free! Only children expect otherwise, even as myths and fairy tales warn us: Rumpelstiltskin, King Midas, Hansel and Gretel. Never trust a candy house! It was only a matter of time before someone made them pay for what they thought they were getting for free. Why could nobody see this?

Finally getting around to Jennifer Egan's latest, "The Candy House", a sort-of sequel to "A Visit From the Goon Squad", but set in tech rather than music circles, centering around authenticity, memory, and the allure of new technology.
And it's already (unsurprisingly) brilliant, who else comes up with a term like "word casing"!

An photo of an excerpt from the book:

But I needed him, too. Why study authenticity if not to seek it—try to wring some last truth from that word before it's so leached of meaning that it becomes a word casing: a shell without a bullet; a term that can be used only inside guotation marks? I needed Alfred to help me avoid writing some phony academic bullshit. This collaborative chapter, hybrid and unorthodox as it may seem in an academic con- text, represents that attempt.

The #tournamentofbooks short list is out. #TheCandyHouse by Jennifer Egan didn't make it. The tournament hasn't started yet and I'm already disappointed. #books #booknerd #BookNerdsUnite

Yesterday I finished #TheCandyHouse by #JenniferEgan. It’s an almost dizzying, intricate novel with chapters from different POVs and in different styles. The title refers to the trap that is the candy house in Hansel and Gretel: if it seems like you’re getting something for free that’s too good to be true, you’ll probably have to pay at some point. The price of social media is your privacy.
