#CurrentlyReading This is a pretty good read if you're into #TheCars. Most everyone who had anything to do with the band is interviewed. Love the chapters about the early years when #RicOcasek + #BenjaminOrr were ambitious but kinda rootless and unfocused. Also some insights into the industry's transition from bloated 1970s arena rock to garish 1980s video rock. The title track was a major success and became the band's first Top 10 single on the Billboard Hot 100. The song, which first achieved radio success as a demo, took inspiration from the #OhioExpress and #theVelvetUnderground. The song was written by lead singer and rhythm guitarist #RicOcasek and sung by bassist #BenjaminOrr. Since Yesterday reviewed on the 'pop panel' segment of BBC kids' TV show Saturday Superstore. The non musicians disparaged it but the musicians were approving. Delia Smith hated the 'doom & gloom', Midge Ure retorted 'I quite enjoy a bit of misery'!

Below Radar ...
The much-maligned Cars album (man, talk about some brutal reviews). I've always felt it took a beating mostly for simply having the nerve to follow up the beloved Heartbeat City (Tusk, anyone?). Also feel it was a turn back to a Cars style found on earlier albums (especially Candy-O and Panorama), which may have turned off many new fans introduced to a poppier, MTV-centric Cars. If you're solely a 'first album' and 'heartbeat' Cars fan, that's fine - certainly can't blame you there. But if you're big into their other albums, I really think you should revisit this one.

I came to a realization today as I was driving around town with this tune blasting out of the Edge and there were folks walking around in their early to mid 60s who probably actually were all over this when they graduated high school in the late spring of 1978 when the debut album by The Cars was released. Suddenly, I didnβt feel bad at all for jamming in the car like a fucking teenager.
