There's sun shining all of the time
Yeah, sun's shining all of the time
Time, time, time, time, time

And sometimes I'm all on my own
Sometimes I'm all on my own
Time, time, time, time, time

If I took a page from your book
It's gonna be page number nine
Time, time, time, time, time…

Time, time, time, time
Sun's shining all of the time
Sun's shining all of the time
Time, time, time…

So from earlier days in my callow youth around the Waitemata Harbour, the original 1982 cut from the "Great Sounds Great, Good Sounds Good, So-so Sounds So-so, Bad Sounds Bad, Rotten Sounds Rotten" EP –

The Great Unwashed [thebigcity.co.nz/artists/g/the]
The Great Unwashed were a quieter, folkier edition of The Clean, a contrast to their raucous earlier sound. Peter Gutteridge's contributions to their song-book should not be understated, with 'Born in the wrong time' an absolute classic.

The Clean – Anthology [thebigcity.co.nz/articles-inte]
Flashback to my 2002 review of The Clean's 'Anthology' (2002, Flying Nun Records, FN468, a double CD monster packed to the brim with material from The Clean's early and mid-period releases.

Note: My original review was a touch naive and under-researched; I've added some notes/corrections.

Victorian Coffee Gallery [thebigcity.co.nz/resources/ven]
Bohemian Cafe that was one of the very few late night spots in Christchurch during the late 1970's through to early 1980s. The Clean filmed the music video for notable early single 'Beatnik' here in 1982. The Volkswagens played here regularly, along with the likes of The Topp Twins (as 17 year olds!), and various other folk performers.

Electric Blood [thebigcity.co.nz/artists/e/ele]
Electric Blood was the formative group of Robert Scott; forming the group with his brother in 1978, and featuring any number of local friends and family members on extremely lo-fi DIY recordings.

Snapper [thebigcity.co.nz/artists/s/sna]
The key group of New Zealand underground legend Peter Gutteridge (despite being a founding member of BOTH the Clean and the Chills). Snapper made driving, droning guitars-infused with synths post-punk throughout the 1980s and 1990s before Gutteridge disappeared from the public eye.

This show was during the short spell between Peter re-emerging from a long performance break and his passing just 2 years later.

The Clean – Compilation

My review of 'Compilation', the original retrospective of The Clean's first phase releases. 2 singles and 2 EPs crammed into a brilliant album.

The Jessels

One off x-mas theme side-project (joke release?) from Toy Love's Chris Knox and his soundman cohort Doug Hood (who both lived in Jessel Street in Grey Lynn, Auckland) featuring their partners Barbara Ward and Carol Hood. Sometimes credited to David Kilgour and Martin Phillips too.

My Top 1000 Songs #198: Point That Thing Somewhere Else. Way back in 1981, New Zealand indie rockers the Clean splayed out a post-Velvets/Stooges extended vamp with a spooky groove, giving punk rockers license to become noisy-ass jam bands. #music #indierock #KiwiRock #TheClean #FlyingNun jitterywhiteguymusic.com/2023/
