The worst thing about now having a fantastic game master in The Dark Eye is that when I'm game mastering I feel the urge to be SIGNIFICANTLY better than I normally am. I work hard on NPCs, I create dozens of pictures and backstories even if they get completely ignored, but I also want my players to win their quests, so I tend to give them tools, and it hopefully plays out well. Looking at early #TheDarkEye rules from the mid-80s, there's interesting bits on how you can progress.
TDE 1E basically had a Tunnels & Trolls set up, where you increased one core ability per level.
If you didn't get lucky enough to become a dwarf, elf or mage at the start, you still could enter some "classes" at a higher level if you achieved its minimum reqs later.
The "fighter" class was open to you. Only benefit was access to all weapons and armor.
You couldn't become a mage, but you could become a druid. Not a nature priest or celtic sage, but a very ominous practitioner of sympathetic magic, evil eye etc.. (It actually capped your charisma at 10)
So "knightly" weapons weren't limited by birth, but "proper" wizardry was.
Of course later editions ignored all that, but it would make some interesting setting building for retro-gaming or as inspiration for homebrew games.
