The fact that BS has been more successful also unsurprising and demonstrates that money matters. Linux didn’t take off either until Redhat started putting money behind it. It’s easy to call someone a sellout when you aren’t the one who sold out. Money, power, prestige, all quite motivating.
That said, I enjoyed a particular tech personality who was super pro-Mastodon, and a big protocols guy. He was offered a board position at that for-profit Mastodon-knockoff BS site, and has basically give up on fedi ever since.
How does one reconcile that? Not being accusatory (maybe a little) just asking for perspective.

Zwei Jahre. 24 Monate. 730 Tage. So lange gibt es diesen Blog – und das nur, weil ich eigentlich nur für mich die Mediatheken durchforste, um Filme zu finden, die etwas riskieren. Filme, die weh tun, irritieren, begeistern, wütend machen. Filme, die nicht glatt gebügelt wurden, Filme für meinen ganz privaten Eskapismus. Ich schreibe darüber, weil sie mich beschäftigen. Weil ich etwas sehe, das nicht untergehen sollte im Strom der Flachware. Und weil ich glaube, dass Filmkritik viel mehr sein kann als Konsumberatung.
Update: I reached out to the Wordcamp Verona team using their contact form, mentioned the Fediverse, how great it would be if they created an account here... and I included my video (in Italian) as an introduction.
I just heard back from one of the organizers that "she never heard about the fediverse but is happy to look into it and watch my video soon."
