When Alice Gooblar-Perovic, Aahana Gupta, and Lydia Cruce were freshmen at Iowa City West High School, they learned that thousands of books, including "The Handmaid's Tale" and "Nineteen Minutes," were going to be pulled from classrooms across their state. This was in order to comply with Senate File 496, which said books and school materials must be "age appropriate." So they started a Banned Book Club. Two years later, the club is still going and growing, and the law is in trouble — the part of it that affected school libraries was temporarily blocked by a federal judge, while enforcement of book restrictions remains frozen under a second temporary injunction. @npr's Iowa Public Radio spoke with the three girls, who are now juniors, about how their goals have changed, and the community they've built.

My girls are cringe-watching Sailor Moon. Every time Tuxedo Mask is romantic with Usagi, they're yelling at the TV "SHE'S 14, YOU PEDO!" #thekidsarealright

I am so damn proud of my daughter. I mean, I often am, but right now for a specific reason. They made a presentation for 8th grade social studies ("anything about WWII") that focused on female Soviet snipers and the Nachthexen (nightwitches), women who flew beat-up, decades-old, flimsy planes on extremely dangerous missions in German territory and bombed the shit out the Nazis. The Nazis gave them the name, apparently, because (to quote my kid): "Sometimes the only sound of their planes, flying only a few feet off the ground in near total darkness, was a soft whooshing that reminded the Nazi soldiers of witches' brooms. Also, you know, men. women. They're scary so all we can think of is witches."

They went far beyond "here are some facts." They made me and their mother (a history prof) choked up when they gave us a preview presentation.

Yay awesome kids!

Note 1: Their teacher saw me today and came to tell me how excellent the presentation was, and that it prompted him to go read up on soviet women in the military.

Note 2: Other notable topics of presentations by other kids apparently included "Tanks" and "Hitler: the Musical"

So this morning I was booked to go and train a bunch of young people (14-15yrs) who without any prompting have set up a company, called Tec Tarw, #recycling computers. They wanted to learn @inkscape to vinyl cut to apply their logo onto their machines/products. I walk in and they are all using @iFixit tools and talking about #repair .. an absolute honour to meet them. #thekidsarealright I'll post their website when they go live etc.

My kid has been going to the Turning Point club at his school.

When I asked him why he said,

"Because I like to debate stupid people."
