"The whole point of a bedside notebook is that it encourages muddled yet possibly devastating communications from the unconscious."

"When this kind of stuff starts to happen fourteen days after you finish a book, you know your head is up & running again. The beauty of it is that you won’t know what it’s working on for months yet; & the beauty of that is its reliability."

Oh, "muddled yet possibly devastating communications from the unconscious", yes, if we find ways of channeling those, half the battle is won.

Far from a simple narrative, the ‘Red Book’ is Carl Gustav Jung's 16-year voyage of discovery into his deepest self. Its 205 pages contain 53 full-page illustrations, 71 pages with both text and artwork, and 81 pages entirely of calligraphic text.

From its hiding place in a Swiss bank vault following his death, the original Red Book went on display at the Rubin Museum of Art, Manhattan from 2009-2010. A 2009 translation of the massive volume went on sale for a hefty US$200, but a subsequent Reader’s Edition became available at more modest prices from 2012.

A wooden Egyptian barge with a hooded man/God at the tiller, pointing the way forward with a stylised staff, sails between the deep green sea and the swirling blue skies.

A monster fish, coloured navy blue with large golden speckles and large teeth with a single long whisker, floats below the barge, moving in the same direction (left to right).
