The main reason for coming to Wales in 2011 was to visit Portmeirion, something we did on my birthday. This was where the classic TV series The Prisoner was filmed. The village here was designed and built by Sir Clough Williams-Ellis and was heavily inspired by Mediterranean fishing villages. In addition to the colourful architecture of the village itself there are extensive gardens and a beach area to explore. Wonderful place.

We're in a rectangular basin designed like a formal garden surrounded by an array of topiary, trees, and colourful buildings on all sides. The ground here is tarmac with a large rectangular pond in the centre with a rounded edge towards us and a fountain at the far end. Benches are dotted around the space facing the pond and there are some raised flower beds with colourful plants in them, including two in front of us framing the pond, both tall tall, yellow-flowering bushes in them and smaller plants of red, pink, and blue around the sides.
