A year ago today we had a dawn blessing with Te Arawa for SHMC, in preparation for the venue being opened to audience for the 2022 Aria’s grand finale.

Today the Aria’s grand finale is once again in the venue.

A bunch of things have gotten better.
Some worse.
Many have stayed the same
(Not me, I left)

So I thought a wee thread while I’ve got 45 minutes might be quite nice. Or at least interesting 😂

I also went to university for #MusicTheatre and then #TheatreDesign, and wearing #AllBlack is our uniform, since it helps us move around backstage unseen.

I even wear black to the beach in high Summer. #soGoth

Black goes with everything and goes everywhere. It's never inappropriate.

Progress.
How do you build your plan?
I like to start with the backlight. For me the backlight shapes everything else. Then I switch between dropping in the big moments and the general, so that the generals are working along side the specials as much as possible.

Then I inevitably get in the room and move stuff. Cos I'm never happy.

I’m kicking up my blog to document my journey as a sound designer for musicals working in NYC. I’m hoping to use this as a space to educate those who might be interested in this career or others in the space!

Thought I'd share more of my theatre costuming from a production of "Eurydice" by Sarah Ruhl, a magical piece done in a myriad of different ways.

Our Stones (whom Orpheus made cry) were earthen clowns, based on Igneous, Sedimentary, and Metamorphic rocks. The bright red period suit was also built specifically for the show.

A production still from the University of San Diego's production of Eurydice by Sarah Ruhl. Two actors stand in a pool of light illuminating a textured and painted teal three-quarter thrust stage floor with a chalk circle drawn on it. On one side of the circle is a rectangle with the words "welcome home" written in it.

Behind the two actors is a plastic "waterfall" lit with a fiery red color. Above their heads is a ratty umbrella in the form of a chandelier lit with Christmas lights.

Off to one side sits a clown figure on a stool, silently watching the action.A production still image from the University of San Diego's production of Sarah Ruhl's Eurydice. Three clown "stones" and a Napoleonic puppet converse with another man in a poet shirt and a vest carrying a lantern. The clowns and puppet are lit in a vertical spotlight, creating creepy shadows on their faces. The rest of the stage is relatively dark and lit with a soft red textured glow.A production still of three actors playing the three Stones in the University of San Diego's production of Sarah Ruhl's "Eurydice". Their faces are painted with distressed white clown makeup, their noses all have small red clown noses held on with elastic.

Each costume is made specifically for the role: Little Stone is draped in heavy bulbous fabric with of orange and green, dusted with dirt and holes. Around her neck is a tattered ruff of sheer fabric, and on her head is a net "bald cap" hat.

Behind her on the left is Loud Stone, in a textured pleather doublet, and fiery red sheer shredded skirt, a red coif on his head and spiky bracelets.

Next to him is Big Stone" in another shredded ruff and white coif. He is partially obscured by the bulk of Little Stone standing in front of him.

Behind them is a shredded plastic "waterfall" descending into a pool of small pool of water.A production still from the University of San Diego's theatre production of Sarah Ruhl's Eurydice.

The image shows three clusters of actors. The cluster on the left is three "stone" clowns in stylized costumes, looking at the pair of actors in the middle of the photo--a young woman in a red shift dress leaning her head on her father's shoulder looking upstage with their backs to the photographer. On the right is a young man with mutton chops in a poet shirt and leather vest looking off stage. He is standing on the edge of a pool, and behind him rises a plastic "waterfall" that ascends to the top of the theatre space. It is light with blues and purple lights.

Over head is a tatty umbrella with multi-colored string lights within it.

The floor of the theatre space is lit with a bright blue geometric pattern.
