#Thirdreality

After some testing and usage of these Sonoff and Thirdreality temperature sensors, while the Thirdreality sensor was more fiddly to get running, it seems to work a bit better, is a bit more responsive to changes, and is actually configurable.

So far, I'm leaning heavily towards standardizing on the Thirdreality sensor.

@t_o I'm using MiFlora (a.co/d/bcpq1u0) everywhere for soil sensing. I have plans to bolt AA rechargeables to them this summer, or maybe rig up a solar bank next to the garden. They are decent on battery individually but once you have a bunch it adds up. Accuracy is good enough to use the plant db integration data for alarms and such.
This hygrometer (
a.co/d/4GxHrvS) has also worked great, I have 3 for the different tents. (Looks like it is on sale, I might get another one..) Every now and again I put them together to make sure they still agree with each other.
I don't have a solution for watering yet, but I have a few in the wings waiting for reviews. I'll probably just build one.
:rick:
Fans, lights, warmers are all driven by ThirdReality zigbee switches (
a.co/d/gXIvyGO), and monitored by a hacky template sensor to ensure the state and the readings (power, illuminance) match the schedule.
For the BLE rx, I don't usually place intentional receivers anymore. Ever since I got the skeleton of the bigear running, I get toothbrushes and rivian car keys and such from several houses away. I don't have to add a radio when
anyone gets new sensors :) That said, most of the receivers are still just esphome on esp32 as a side gig to their normal operation.

Rant: I can't mention BLE switches without a huge strong screaming warning:
Do Not Buy Switchbot! After 2 tried to burn down my house, yes really, I took them out of service. They will fail eventually, even under-loaded, and when they do they will toggle on-off-on-off at about 4x per second until either you unplug it or the downstream equipment catches fire. Then you will find out that they don't cover the warranty unless you buy it in person from the CEO at his home on a leap day. I've got a stack of these stupid things, 3 of which failed on me after use with loads like "10 watt pole fan" and "buggy esp32 device on an old 5w usb charger that I reboot every day" :(

Apparently Thirdreality Zigbee plugs log a lot more information than I realized because it wasn't enabled in Home Assistant by default.

I should see what else is in there.

@John @JSCybersec I just got a few #ThirdReality electrical outlet devices to evaluate. The #Aqara leak sensors are really loud, but since my spouse and I both have hearing issues, even that is not enough. So, I have alerts announced through Apple #HomePod Minis around the house and alerts sent to our mobile phones and pads. This is definitely not a minimal system, 🤣but I’m very tech familiar and have fun with it!

I might take those handful out of their current service. They had a specific purpose while tracking down some power stuff. That purpose is done, and they’ve just lived there because no need to bother them.

But yeah, don't want future firmware updates to be a concern.

In the past, I had to run firmware updates one at a time on my Zigbee network. It seems whatever updates came through for the coordinator and for Z2M has made updating work way better, and I can update multiple at once.

Third Reality appears to have released a firmware for their plugs. I use these, primarily, for their power monitoring capability.

Unfortunately these cycle power when updating :( Some plugs will have to wait.

@lil5
First a quick rant: DO NOT BUY SWITCHBOT. They are unsafe and have no warranty and they can suck whatever piece of my anatomy they find most distasteful. We couldn't afford to replace them, but we had to anyway because Fire is Bad.

Ahem. Anyway. Yes! The grow is driven by
#HomeAssistant (along with the rest of the #snarkhouse.) I can post the grow hardware BoM (my lights, plugs, etc) if you're interested, but the basic stack is #HomeAssistant as a #Truenas VM with everything else on ARM64 under #k3s. The control plane is CM4 on #TuringPi2, and Zigbee/Zwave pods talk to ser2sock + node-feature-detector to find their USB radios. (They are plugged into the client port of the Turing, so I can move them programmatically.)

On the far side of the radios, a cheap
#esp32 Rover handles #bigear listening as well as the MiFloras and #BLE hygrometers. Inside the grow tent, an #esp32cam on a 3d printed mount watches over the grow. Power relays are a mix of old #Securifi peanuts and new #ThirdReality switches. (DO NOT BUY SWITCHBOT.)

Edit to add: I use power use to confirm that the lights and such are working, and templated 'traffic light' sensors (ok/error) confirm that the schedule, the switch and the power drain all align. If it goes red, the house starts shouting at us about it.

The grow room environment graph. It shows about 24h. On the bottom, a large yellow overlay shows the lighting cycle. Very regular red strips show the stir fan raising the humidity, with fewer dark blue bands indicating the exhaust fan dehumidifying frequently at night and less so when the LED and associated cooling fan are running. The temperature climbs suddenly from 65F to 75F when the lights come on.

I should align the left and right axis labels but I won't.

Wow, that is impressive for a wall-powered device.

(The UPS plugs into it, not the other way around. Mostly using it to measure watts at my desk.)

#smarthome #snarkhome #thirdreality #zigbee

A graph showing the office UPS input monitor briefly reported 0 volts.
Challenge level: wall powered device, not protected by the UPS it is watching.

The ongoing saga of getting mailbox notifications into #HomeAssistant continues. I've tried Sonoff and Samsung motion sensors with both the Sonoff and #SkyConnect zigbee bridges. In all combinations, it eventually goes offline at some point and needs to have the battery popped out to reset.

I am experimenting with a #ThirdReality motion sensor. I'm working on the assumption that using 2 AAA batteries gives the radio more juice to cover the ~60 m. So far so good.

@greppy the #thirdreality motion sensors control the lights in both home offices, the basement, and the "guest" bathroom, currently. Eventually, they'll be in the other 1.5 baths. My original motion sensors were #sonoff ones, but one never worked properly, the other developed the same false triggers constantly.

The temp/humidity were just added tonight for all 3 bedrooms (2 as home offices), the hallway upstairs, main level, and basement. Eventually I'll feed that data to #mqtt or something.

@greppy and that's because they're both cheaper (so damages or theft won't make me cry as much). A 2 tube fluorescent fixture above the washer & driver uses a #SmartThings plug-in module, which acts as a #zigbee repeater, as well as a few #innr plug-in modules across all 3 floors of the house. Some control fans, one my cable modem so I can power cycle it from my couch, and some used to control recirculating dog water bowls.

I have #thirdreality motion sensors and (now) temp/humidity ones.

That didn't take long to assign all 6 temp & humidity #zigbee sensors from #thirdreality that arrived today. Eventually, I'd like to shuffle the data into a DB or something to look at trends. Just, not today.
