If I had a nickle for every time throwing some guys out of a window in Prague caused a major religious war, I would have two nickles, which isn't much, but it's weird that it happened twice.

“‘If protection rackets represent organized crime at its smoothest,’ argues Tilly, ‘then war making and state making—quintessential protection rackets with the advantage of legitimacy—qualify as our largest examples of organized crime.’”

dont be fooled, if nothing is done about it, it wont matter in what nationalistic state you are "amongst your own"; a chosen few will be mightier than any of those worn down entities.

After the #ThirtyYearsWar Renée du Bec-Crespin continued her diplomatic activities, although informally. In 1659 she was appointed as Maria Theresa of Spain’s maid of honour, but she died on her way to receive the bride at the Spanish-French border.
If you want to read more about Renée du Bec-Crespin, we recommend the article by Anuschka Tischer who was one of first researchers to highlight female #emdiplomats:
Anuschka Tischer, Eine französische Botschafterin in Polen: die Gesandtschaftsreise Renée de Guébriants zum Hofe Władisławs IV. 1645/1646, in L’Homme. Zeitschrift für feministische Geschichtswissenschaft 2 (2001), 305-321.

During the #ThirtyYearsWar she turned into an officially accredited #emdiplomat – an absolute exceptional case because most female #earlymodern #diplomats were acting informally. In 1638 Renée du Bec-Crespin was offically entrusted to hand over instructions regarding the negotiations on #Breisach fortress to her husband.
In 1645 she was dispatched to #Poland as ambassadrice extraordinare in the context of the marriage between Maria de Gonzaga and Polish king Wladyslaw IV. Although it was quite normal that (experienced) ladies-in-waiting accompanied a princely bride when she moved to her new #dynasty, these missions usually were led by men. Renée Bec-Crespin was made head of the embassy and thus the first and most distinguished representative of the royal family. This once more emphasises her exceptional standing as one of only a very few #womeninmalefields. (2/3)

#RhodeIsland rarely comes up in the #ScienceFiction I normally read, but it has in the book I #amReading currently, _Roswell_ by Sonny Whitelaw and Jennifer Fallon, a #Stargate SG-1 novel. After a series of errors, the team ends up in Providence in 1908, and resorts to breaking into #BrownUniversity (with the help of 17-year-old Howard Phillips #Lovecraft) to find parts to fix their time machine.
Other books that mention my home state include _True Names_ by Vernor Vinge, where one of the characters engaging in virtual reality in the story made their real-life home in #RI. Also the _Red Son_ #AltHist duology by John Deakins and Herb Sakalaucks, where political changes that ensued from the 1990s town of #Grantville popping up in the #ThirtyYearsWar, King Charles I sold off England's North American holdings to France.
A final work was another #AlternateHistory story, "The Sleeping Serpent" by Pamela Sargent, where the Mongol horde conquered Western Europe. Centuries later the Khanate had settlements on the eastern coast of North America. A young prince, disgusted by the decadence of the late empire and admiring the lifestyle of the Natives, fomented a revolution in these Colonies with the help of a half-blood resident and some tribes. #SciFi

... of these foreign fighters for your fancy printing product? Well, you could always just "borrow" an image from another print, and hope that nobody would care.
Like here, where in 1631 "Irish" soldiers were clearly Ottoman fighters from another print.
Let the story begin. We are in the 1630s, in the middle of the #thirtyyearswar. Among the many soldiers were also Scots and Irish merceneries, fighting for either the Catholic or Protestant cause. And because the war was the first media war of Europe, we have a lot of news media from this time.
Wallenstein: The Pillar of the Thirty Years' War
Albrecht Wenzel Eusebius von Wallenstein (1583-1634), a name that resonates with the echoes of the Thirty Years' War, was not just a military leader but a pivotal figure in the shaping of European history during the early 17th century.

WEWEWEDENME - what?
Fancy a story of a wonderfish with 2 human legs, a sword, 2 pikes, and a godly warning on the fish skin? Welcome to #earlymodern Europe's world of publishing: this fish story hit the news in 1616, just 2 years before the #ThirtyYearsWar broke out, and used an unusual warning code: WEWEWEDENME - in German: Wehe, Wehe, Wehe den Menschen. Let's start a thread about #WEWEWEDENME #histodons #bookhistory #mediahistory #history

What you see are angels picking up and collecting the teardrops of the 20.000 killed in 1631 during the so called Sack of #Magdeburg. The event was a major massacre of the European conflicts known as #ThirtyYearsWar and became a media event: this is one published detail of its visual media echoes.

> .. If he had been Dutch, there would have been too many Dutchmen; if Italian, too many Italians; and if French, too many Frenchmen. The unhappy #ThirtyYearsWar was devastating Germany; but every other country looks back to this century as an epoch which witnessed some culmination of its genius. Certainly this was a great period of English thought; as at a later time #Voltaire impressed upon France.
