Round #2 of Tibetan Mastiff fiber prep testing!

As before, I started out combing out clumps to get the best aligned fibers possible and set aside the rest. The first photo here shows the staple length of what I'm working with. MUCH longer than husky!

Instead of using the brush to push the fiber down into the blending board (my technique with clouds of husky fluff), I dragged these combed bits down the tines to keep the fibers straight and aligned and only used the brush to push it deeper. I also worked deliberately from the bottom up, to facilitate removal. (I'm surprised I hadn't figured this out earlier!)

Then I took the discards and carded them to align the fibers (which worked surprisingly well) and then used the same drag technique to add them to the blending board.

The result: two new rolags to test spinning!

A clump of combed fur lies gently on an open hand. The fur is dark gray on the bottom, which is the denser undercoat region, and gradiates to reddish orange and gray at the top, outer tips of the fur. It has been combed into long, even strands around 8 inches or 20 centimeters long. Two new rolags of Tibetan Mastiff fur site in a clear plastic bin next to three spools of spun mastiff fur singles. The rolags are dark brown, slightly mottled with reddish and grayish regions. While the preparation between them is different, it's hard to tell one from the other by this photo.

The source of the fluff can be revealed!

This is Oni being relieved of shed fur by @foxfeather. Such an absolute fluffmonster!

I'm told that she's not even done shedding her winter coat! There may be MORE fur to come.

A very large, fluffy dog lies on a throw rug on its side while being brushed by a human. The dog is a Tibetan Mastiff with a very thick coat of reddish brown fur. A young dog with black and tan fur entertains itself off to the side.

Check out this gorgeous fiber!

I was recently gifted a bag of fur shed from Oni, a Tibetan Mastiff owned by @foxfeather and @mbala. This is going to be SO different to spin than the much shorter husky fur I've been working with.

I absolutely love the parts where dark inner fur turns into a fiery orange at the tip, all in the same strand! I'd love to work out some combination of fiber prep and spinning that keeps the dark end towards the core, wrapped by the orange tips, so that if any bloom/halo develops, it prefers the orange end.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

A grocery bag of long fluffy fur ranging from nearly black to orange-brown sits next to three bins of sorted fur: one that is mostly dark and very long, one that has clumps of stark gradient fur that goes very dark gray to bright fiery orange, and a smaller collection of all orange/beige fur with very little dark.
