This is my mockup. The colours are just temporary, I'll choose one that matches the t-shirt when the time comes.

I'm not sure if I should include the Truck On! My nephew wanted it, but maybe it would look better on the back?

Again, as soon as it dries, the white isn't visible anymore.

Maybe I've accidentally made one of those t-shirts that changes colour when you sweat!

I think it's more likely that when the fabric is wet, the base colour looks darker so the white shows. πŸ€·πŸ½β€β™€οΈ Probably.

Anyway, I've ironed it. Hopefully I did it long enough. Now I can wash it and see how well the colour sticks.

Wow! It looks pretty good. So good, I don't want to paint the MAN TGX onto it!

Now I have to let it dry, heatset it, then wash out the paint. Remember! Heatset first!!!

Then we'll see how much of the pattern stays after washing.

The t-shirt opened up and hung up to dry. The spiral pattern is clear and the colours show up well.

I asked my nephew what he wants to do with it. The bits that were meant to be silver, he said it looks like stains! He said, from far away you can see the spiral properly, but not from close.

I said what do you want me to do? I can leave it like this and paint the tractor unit, or I can try doing another round of tie dye. He said he doesn't mind and to do what I thought best.

So I said I'll try another round and if it goes wrong, I'll buy a new t-shirt and start again.

When I wet the fabric to start round 2, the white spirals showed!

Anyway, I've applied a new round of diluted paint and this time I'll try to remember to heatset it first.

In any case, I might have a look through some charity shops for cheap plain white cotton anything and go on a tiedye spree. Maybe I can make a bunch of cushions or little bags and stuff as gifts. I need to get the sewing machine working though.

#tiedye #crafts #diy

After the first round, I wet the fabric to start round 2, but now the colours are so much more vibrant! It's a shame they fade again when dry.Round 2. The t-shirt is spiralled and bound with rubber bands. I've applied primary cyan, white and grey (no silver) to the t-shirt.

It came out okay! The back actually looks better than the front, but it's not a big deal as I plan to paint a graphic on the front anyway. It looks better IRL than in the photos.

I'm going to let it dry, then wash and iron it and see how well the paint has stained.

The metallic silver didn't really come out much.

Lessons for next time: listen to lessons from previous time!

I tried white, silver and slate blue. I initially was going to use grey, but thought silver would work better. Spoiler: it didn't.

I couldn't get the darker blue tone correct, so I tried to add ultramarine, except... it was lumpy.

#crafts #diy #tiedye

Preparing a slate blue tshirt for spiral tiedye. Fabric paint colours used: white, silver, dark steel blueThe paint added to the fabric bundle. The ultramarine didn't dilute so it has left lumps.

Heatset, washed, hung out to dry, got wet again in the rain, dried again!

It looks nicer in real life! In the other photos, the white balance was making it look more vibrant than it was, so I've adjusted it so that (at least on my screen) it looks closer to the irl colours.

I just need to stitch it together now. Which is going to be difficult, because even though my mum gave me her sewing machine, the DB has taken the plug and the spare parts (including the spare foot my mum got to replace the broken one on this machine).

Also, I am lazy and bad at getting things done.

Lessons for next time:

🌈 Don't use paint that's gone lumpy.
🌈 Mix the fabric medium with the acrylic thoroughly before adding water.
🌈 Add just enough water to make it runny. I think I diluted it too much, so I got the washed out pastel effect.
🌈 Use tighter rubber bands or cord, not these cheap crappy bands that break if you look at them.
🌈 I'm not sure if soaking overnight would make a difference as I just let the paint dry before heatsetting and washing.

I've only just got round to heatsetting it. I feel like the colour has faded from the heat but it might just be the lighting. I can see the stars clearly now.

If this works, I'm thinking I might finally start on the t-shirt I planned to paint for my nephew. I can tiedye it to make the background more interesting, then print out some lineart of a tractor unit and then transfer it with the pencil method.

Ironing the tiedye scrap with some greaseproof paper between the iron and the fabric

I tied it, the 7 year old dyed it. Before & after rinsing - it lost some colour but it still looks pretty good. I've been sick at home all week and needed some creativity. #spiral #tiedye #kids

It looks so vibrant tied up, but after letting it set a few hours, I opened it up at night and the colour isn't as deep, but it looks okay! It was disappointing under artificial light, but in daylight it looks quite good. For a first attempt, I'm happy.

I need to heat set it as I've used fabric medium and acrylic. I'll let it cure a while longer as I'm at work till late today. Tomorrow I'll heat set it, then I'll try washing it and seeing how well the paint stays.

Using paint rather than dye will always make the fabric a little stiffer, but at the moment, it's only kind of crusty-feeling on the edges where the paint is really thick.

If this works, then this is a nice cheap way to tie dye!

Anyway, typical cyan! See how well it stains my clothes and skin, but here it goes all shy!

#tiedye #crafts #diy

I found the fabric medium, so I used that to make the acrylic more fabric-safe.

I like the way it looks now, but of course, I still have to wash out the paint and see if it has stuck!

Also I don't think I stirred it enough. I stirred it lots, but I can see clumps of fabric medium.

I'm going to attempt to use acrylic paint to make a tie dye cover for my side pillow.

Having extensive experience of getting acrylic on my clothes, they don't come out in the wash. I've also used diluted acrylic to paint polycotton for my #dollshouses. I've just never tried it for tie dye.

I'm trying to decide if I should use glycerine with watered down acrylic to make the dye or if I should use the Scola fabric medium. I had a bad experience using the fabric medium on my backpack. However, being flat fabric, I can at least heat set this pillowcase.

I don't have any plain cotton, so I'm using the reverse side of this scrap of star print pyjama bottoms.

Used a different technique on this shirt. Same dyes as the previous purple shirt, but this one really gave the watercolor effects and some amazing splits!
