I've been feeling the urge to revisit the iconic, 1930s #Dracula with Lugosi for a while, and since it is #DraculaDay it seems like an approriate evening to pick this from my film library (I have a nice set of the 1930s and 40s Universal horror flicks, a perfect gift from a chum years ago).

Mark of the Vampire

I believe this was the last film by Tod Browning. It starts out as a horror but it’s actually a crime story in line with most of Browning’s films.

Lugosi returns from Dracula but Barrymore and Atwill carry the film as two apposing partners.

There are some great Fx and creepy shots and humor that reminded me of James Whale’s horror movies.

Corrected a major gap in my cinematic vampire knowledge by finally watching George Melford’s Drácula (1931). This Spanish language version used the same sets as Tod Browning’s movie, which was filming at the same time. Melford’s production shot at night with different actors. The cast included Eduardo Arozamena as Van Helsing (excellent performance), Carlos Villarías as Conde Drácula (looking very much like Nic Cage), and the show-stealing Pablo Álvarez Rubio as Renfield. The end result is a movie half an hour longer than the one with Bela Lugosi. True, it may suffer from slow pacing, but I really liked it.

Miałem tyle lat, miesięcy i dni co wczoraj, gdy dowiedziałem się, że "Dziwolągi" ("Freaks", 1932, Tod Browning) wyświetlano w Japonii już w 1932 roku, siedem miesięcy po amerykańskiej premierze, do tego pod tytułem "Trupa potworów" ("Kaibutsu-dan").

Na pierwszej załączonej grafice możecie zobaczyć ładny, wizualnie ciekawy, bo niedosłowny i grający tajemnicą, plakat z epoki. Na drugiej natomiast skan reklamy prasowej, z bardziej dosłowną ilustracją.

Warto nadmienić, że współcześnie w Japonii raczej nie stosuje się pierwotnego japońskiego tytułu, lecz "Furīkusu" (フリークス), będący zapisem katakaną oryginalnego amerykańskiego tytułu.

I found myself liking Tod Browning's 1935 Mark of the Vampire a bit more on a rewatch. Most of its problems are due to butchering by the Production Code. Carol Borland and Bela Lugosi look great but sadly most of their scenes were heavily cut.
