#Tomatoes

Did a session of erecting poles and strings for the tomatoes and trimming their lower leaves. I planted fairly tightly given the raised beds in use this year, so I'd like to be rather ruthless with the pruning to maximize fruit.

I must read up on effective tomato pruning beyond my typically minimal approach.

The watermelon and honeydew melon bed. The youngest watermelon seedling was thinned to one, the older plants are vining fast, and the center planter with marigolds, fireweed (I think), and a tomato plant is looking good.

A small watermelon plant after it's sibling was pulled from the soil. There is a rooster feather beyond it from the chicken compost.A larger watermelon plant that is vining out in a couple of directions. There is a marigold plant near and far on the edge of the raised hexagon shaped bed and a 35 gallon blue planter beyond to the left and the single small plant previously shown in the distance.A green flesh honeydew melon plant. It is more upright than the watermelon plants and is vining out too.The blue center planter in the hexagon raised bed. It has some fireweed plants, or willowherb, marigolds, and a single tomato plant that has a green stake next to it. There is a row of strawberry plants beyond the raised bed.

I'm generally well-disposed toward native animals, but the deer are getting dangerously close to crossing a line here.

A small tomato plant growing in a bag. It clearly just started to grow significantly, but all of its upper branches have been stripped bare in the eight hours since I last looked at it.

We are long-overdue for an update! Things have been pretty crazy for all three of us - we all had Covid last week but are on the mend!

We realized this morning that we never updated about our tomatoes! We picked them up on 4 May (first photo) and here they are as of this morning (second photo).

Three potted tomato plants on a windowsill, each with a label identifying their variety: Chiibiko, A Grappoli D'Inverno, and Beliy Naliv. They are placed in a black tray with visible soil and leaves.Three potted tomato plants of varying heights are positioned on a balcony. The plants are surrounded by mulch, with a light background of a street and houses visible in the distance.

Gah, I’ve got bugs on my tomato plants. I’m pretty sure it’s aphids. Tiny reddish/brown in clusters on the underside of some leaves.

Treatment recommendations?

@Rozzychan I pick my tomatoes as soon as they start to ripen on the vine, and they do fine getting fully ripe inside. I do this because the squirrels or other critters sometimes take a bite and leave most of fruit on the ground, where it is no good to anyone, except I suppose as compost. Less waste picking early 😊

I did not get everything done today that I wanted to. This week was not as productive as I had hoped.

But I did attend a protest. I also prepared for Ghost to go into surgery tomorrow (which I'm very very nervous about - Bilateral TPLO - here's hoping the insurance comes through and pays the 90% I think they will of the the $11,500 bill)

I also finished the garden prep and got the corn and squashes in, filled out all the beds, and tidied up a bit.

Oh, and I picked nearly 2 pounds of cherries (after pitting)

If you're west of #PDX and need some #Tomatoes, let me know.
