#TouchScreens

If anyone wants to volunteer for @vulpinelabs let me know are we need those who want to design for accessibility and furgonomics (furry ergonomics) for a gene editing system as our main contributer doesn't understand it's importance even in pre-alpha

Pretty sure I'm on my last smartphone. (And I've never had a tablet.) Capacitive touchscreens have always been terrible for me, but at this point any phone or tablet I touch considers me an inanimate object four times out of five. I think I'm done hoping the technology will come around.

@modulux @swearyanthony Whilst #touchscreens can increase #accessibility and #longevity (no button / force needed) they also can hinder intuitive operation.

  • There's a resson we have buttons and knobs and levers in cars, ships, airplanes and even on bikes and scooters: You don't want to click through menues to be able to turn off the radio, activate warning lights or pull over...

You want immediate and blind control...

Touch Screens Are Over. Even Apple Is Bringing Back Buttons.

Product designers are embracing how users actually feel after years of pushing flat & sleek

15 years of watching designers & engineers cram touchscreens & capacitive buttons down our throats, only to be outflanked by a new generation of thinkers who recognize that true luxury is the considered weight of a dial, the reassuring click of a physical key.

There's a reason in #aviation there are all dedicaded buttons and switches and no #touchscreens:

  • Because people can blindly press buttons and turn dials without taking their eyes off the road!

Also said controls are way more intuitive because they all are presented on a single & flat control plane with only settings that users don't need to access during driving (i.e. audio equalizer & -presets) put onto a secondary control plane because it's not expected that one has to fumble with these or that if anyone wants to, they'll have time to pull over and stop driving...

  • Not to mention simple buttons - even a custom faceplate of those - are cheaper than a touchscreen and way easier to get used to.

If I want a touchscreen in my car I'd just take Smartphone and put it into a holder.

  • The fact that as of writing no car [that I'm aware of] comes [from the factory by default] with a smartphone holder with adjustable USB-C charging connector for a smooth experience of just "PnP" charging and audio in the peripheral vision of the driver is beyond me.

  • What am I supposed to do with a center console that is wider than the middle front seat of a #CrownVic? And why does it have some shitty armrest with a tiny compartment??

Personally, the more I've driven cars made after 2010 the more angry I get...

PLATO system required response to user input *under 120 ms* in 1960's, even remotely.
And in 2024 we regularly get slow responses on touch screens that sometimes take *seconds*, often locally.

@Dolphinchaz nodds in agreement

I've even met illustrators that refuse to work on anything else than #wacom drawing screens for the same reasons:

  • Those screens just work so naturally that even avid paper users that hate #touchscreens are almost always being swayed due to the absurd accurracy well beyond what they can get their drawings scanned in...

Plus palm rejection is basically perfect...

Any novelty I entertained for touchscreens in the past has now completely worn off. I loathe them. Please give me buttons and keyboards back. I'm begging you. #usability #touchscreens #mobility #fatgeriatricfingers 🤬

@Cyb3rrunn3r wiue das?

Also dass Leute #Touchscreens hassen kann ich verstehen...

Aber normale Tastaturen?

It was obvious to tech types like myself why #Tesla went with a touchscreen for their interiors: #Touchscreens are WAY cheaper than gauges, buttons, & knobs.

Tesla spent their R&D dollars in their powertrains, and they became rightfully famous for it, but they spent virtually zero on the vehicle interiors and instead touted the bland interiors as minimalist design ethos…and it worked.

And instead of staying the course, the industry followed, and now people are mad.

@zkrisher @esther

I have enough trouble with #touchscreens, and I'm sighted. I can't imagine how difficult it is for you.

Where I am, #retail locations are replacing their older POS #payment terminals with newer-generation ones that ditch the #keypad for a touchscreen. The pads of my fingers are thick and dry and don't activate them well; it takes 3 or 4 tries to activate each "button" press.

How on earth are the blind supposed to use these?

#UI designers need to meet real #users.
