One could probably take the sidewalk going the other way, but more slowly and/or at more risk of drivers pulling in and out without expecting anyone to be zipping through on the sidewalk. @knord so "details matter" and a lot of the challenge, IMO, is to get into that level of the design and get #trafficEngineers to offer the right options into the beginning of the process, prioritizing safety and access above car speeds, and in the context of current/future/desired land use. That all requires some acceptance of how #InducedDemand and understandig how actual drivers behave, so we have a long way to go & may well build a shitload of bad roundabouts that aren't good to bike either.
#trafficEngineers need to have teenagers drive through their designs in a simulator or something. This parking lane before Salmon is a left-turn-only lane on the next block, and they want people on bikes to stand there in an unprotected green box between those two car-parking/driving spaces.

#trafficEngineers like to say safety comes first, but they mean the crosswalk signal makes walking illegal after a few seconds while the green light stays on for several more seconds, partly because the street has been made twice as wide as necessary, "for safety". They're just ensuring car speed, and that almost nobody who can afford a car will walk, bike, or take transit. This is fundamentally the opposite of safety. #20isPlenty #FuckCars #BanCars
