Today's historic photo of the day: Exactly 39 years ago today, candy 42219 and a VLine X class head the Sydney-bound Southern Aurora in platform 1, Spencer Street station, Melbourne, Vic, June 21 1986. Note the ghostly image of a rail worker on the tracks talking to the driver.

The Southern Aurora was an all-sleeping-car overnight #train between Sydney and Melbourne. Introduced in 1962 when the standard gauge track to Melbourne was opened, it was the height of 1960s styling and luxury.

A night time long exposure image taken from an overbridge looking down onto a loco hauled passenger train standing at a curved platform at a city terminal station. The train, which is of stainless steel fluted body carriages with a motorail car carrying wagon, is headed by two diesel locomotives - the leading one of which is a 422 class boxcab style unit painted in NSW SRA Candy livery. The ghostly image of a railwayman in overalls is captured standing on the adjacent track looking up at the loco cab talking to the train driver.
