I spent most of my high school years without phone privileges, so I'd sneak calls. I didn't get good at obeying; I got good at sneaking.

TW: claustrophobia, anxiety.

Two lesbian couples stumbled back from dinner in that warm, heavy, beachside night. Bellies full, wallets empty, skin sticky with humidity, they crossed the lobby of their Airbnb with the soft crash of waves muffling the mosquito buzz around them. Everyone was smiling, glowing from good food and better company.

They stepped into the elevator still chatting about dessert, but the moment the doors closed the machine lurched, hummed, and froze. The lights stayed on, but everything else stopped. Their conversation stopped with it.

A tiny alarm chimed, more like a doorbell than anything serious.

"Do we call 911?" someone asked.

"There is no fire rescue here," someone else answered, voice already tight.

The air thickened fast. It felt like stepping into an oven. Sweat began to form on foreheads and backs. One girl was claustrophobic. Another struggled with anxiety and panic attacks. And now all four of them were stuck in a metal box barely bigger than a closet.

At first, there was hope. Footsteps outside. A rattle. A voice through the door.

"Uh... hi. I’m just some teenager. The owner asked me to watch the building, but I don’t really know what to do..."

Not ideal.

Then his footsteps faded away. Silence.

The claustrophobic girl’s breathing turned shallow. Her partner tried to soothe her, whispering, rubbing her arms, offering anything to hold onto. The rest of them exchanged looks that all meant the same thing.

We’re on our own.

The anxious girl, the one whose brain usually overloaded with worries, found something sharp and decisive take over. She liked mechanics, liked tinkering, always had. And now that instinct kicked in hard.

"If we’re getting out," she muttered, "we’re doing it ourselves."

She jammed her fingers into the seam between the inner elevator doors and pushed. The doors resisted like they were welded shut. She gritted her teeth, braced her whole body, and forced them open an inch at a time. Every inch she gained, half slid back. It was like wrestling something that wanted to swallow them whole.

Finally, the gap widened enough to see the outer doors.

Except… they weren’t aligned. Two sets of doors. Concrete between them. They were trapped between floors.

"Hold it," she said, breathless. One of the girls slid down onto the floor, planting her feet and using her whole body to keep the inner doors apart.

The claustrophobic girl whimpered. Her partner whispered urgently, grounding her with touch and soft words. The air kept heating.

The anxious girl leaned into the gap, squinting at the metal panel near the outer doors. Wires. A latch. Something mechanical. Maybe something electrical.

Her pulse spiked.

"OK," she whispered to herself. "I have no idea how elevator electronics work. Could be high voltage. Could be nothing. I really hope it’s nothing."

She reached in with a single cautious finger and brushed the edge of a metal lever. No zap. No hum. No heat.

Safe enough.

The lever refused to move at first. She tested it again, then pushed harder. It wiggled. Something clicked. It felt spring-loaded, like it was fighting her on purpose. She pressed her shoulder against the wall, got both hands around the mechanism, and pushed with everything she had.

The girl holding the inner doors was shaking now. Her legs were slipping. The doors crept inward by centimeters.

"It’s now or never," the anxious girl said, her voice cracking.

She shoved the lever up.

A heavy internal clunk echoed through the shaft.

The outer doors jerked, then slid open.

"Go, go, go!"

The others moved fast. They climbed over the girl holding the doors and out into the hallway, pulling and catching each other in a scramble of limbs and adrenaline. The last girl was hauled out just as the inner elevator doors snapped shut behind her with violent force.

Silence again. Empty hallway. Four shaking girls.

No one came to check on them. No apology. No staff. Nothing.

The only trace of the entire ordeal was the "out of order" sign taped to the elevator the next morning.

And one of the girls in that elevator… was me.
