This is a photo of our chestnut tree this fall. It shed unknown quantities of chestnuts, of which we redeemed about 15 pounds (about 7 kg). My daughter raked up all the leaves and burs so that Monty wouldn't hurt his dainty paws.

A crooked old chestnut tree glows golden brown next to a dark green Douglas fir in our backyard. The chestnut has had several surgeries to remove dead branches and looks a bit hectic with a spot almost empty of branches in the middle. You can also see our container vegetable garden located for maximum sun exposure.

I believe the #AnnArbor Forestry Dept. still lets you request a new street tree from their list of approved species (thanks Dean fund!). My ~1990 pick of a Red Oak is now 75" DBH and having a Mast Year™, and so the current chipmunk & squirrel situation out front is HILARIOUS

Some trees, like Oak and Beech, keep their leaves through the winter months. This ‘holding on’ of leaves through the winter months is known as marcescence (from the Latin, marcescere = to fade).
