For the eastern and central North Pacific east of 180 longitude:

1. South of Southern Mexico:
A large area of disorganized showers and thunderstorms located
several hundred miles south of southern Mexico is associated with a
broad area of low pressure. Environmental conditions appear
conducive for gradual development of this system, and a tropical
depression is likely to form over the weekend while it moves
generally westward to west-northwestward around 10 mph.
* Formation chance through 48 hours...low...30 percent.
* Formation chance through 7 days...high...80 percent.

This one day a year and a half ago we went to the beach during a tropical depression and upon coming back from a little walk, noticed someone stuck a sunflower into the sand and it just stood tall and proud. A quiet couple of weeks, and now we’re back with 2 active tropical systems in the Pacific!

• #TropicalStorm #Jebi has formed off the Northern Marianas, and will stay away from major landmass as it moves north over the next few days.
• A #TropicalDepression south of #Okinawa will soon become TS #Krathon as it moves on a V-shaped trajectory towards Luzon, Philippines, before coming near #Taiwan mid next week as a #Typhoon with 115kts/132mph/213kph winds and 140kts/161mph/259kph gusts.

It is forecast to move northwest for the next two days, before slowly moving northeast. It is not expected to pass through major landmass before transitioning to an extratropical cyclone to the east of Hokkaido, Japan, by next Wednesday. Current wind speeds at 35kts/40mph/65kph, with gusts up to 45kts/52mph/83kph.Forecast map of Tropical Depression Twenty issued by the Joint Typhoon Warning Center on September 27, 2024 at 0900 UTC. It will soon be named Krathon as it intensifies into a tropical storm. The system is centered some 695km SSW of Kadena, Okinawa. It is forecast to move southwest for the next two days and gradually intensifying into a typhoon by Sunday afternoon to the east of Luzon, Philippines. It will then move northwest for the next three days as its gale force winds will envelop all of Taiwan by late Tuesday and much of Wednesday. Current wind speeds at 25kts/29mph/46kph with gusts up to 35kts/40mph/65kph. JTWC forecasts Krathon to reach max wind speed of 115kts/132mph/213kph winds with gusts up to 140kts/161mph/259kph. On the other hand, the Japan Meteorological Agency has given a much lower max wind forecast at 65kts/75mph/120kph and gusts up to 95kts/109mph/176kph.

The NYT says some places will get 30 inches from Debbie.

This sort of thing reminds me of the absolutely devastating storms that hit Greece and North Africa last year, which were NOT hurricanes but very very very WET storms.

Tropical-Storm-Force Wind Speed Probabilities for the 120 hours (5 days) from 1 PM CDT SAT OCT 28 to 1 PM CDT THU NOV 02 Probability shows a maximum of 30% for tropical-storm wind on the coast of El Salvador. The center of the cyclone is currently located offshore Central America.
