'Severe pushback': #HouseRepublicans fear constituent revolt over divisive new proposal

by Carl Gibson, 8/13/2025

"House Republicans are now pondering whether to pursue another major legislative push involving #Medicaid later this year, just months after narrowly passing President Donald #Trump's massive tax and spending policy. But some are hesitant out of fear for how their constituents would react.

"Politico reported Wednesday that the Republican Study Committee (RSC) – which is made up of 189 Republican members of Congress — has invited a controversial figure to its Thursday meeting that suggests the GOP may make even steeper cuts to Medicaid this year or in early 2026. According to the outlet, #ParagonHealth Institute president #BrianBlase, who is credited as the architect of Republicans' Medicaid cuts in the #OneBigBeautifulBillAct, to this week's meeting.

"Blase's address to the RSC comes as Republicans plot whether to embark on another legislative crusade before the end of the year, even though the tax and spending bill almost failed to pass despite Republican majorities in both chambers of Congress. While no official details have emerged, Politico reported that Blase's invitation likely means that future Medicaid cuts could be on the table.

"Changes to Medicare may also be included in the conversation, as Blase will be accompanied by #DemetriousKouzoukas, who leads Paragon's Medicare Reform Initiative. According to its website, Paragon is focused on changes to #Medicare and #Medicaid policy, and its leadership and board have numerous ties to #FarRight policy groups like the #HeritageFoundation (which created #Project2025) and the #FederalistSociety.

"Not all Republicans are on board with another divisive vote on additional Medicaid cuts. Rep. #MikeFlood (R-Neb.) reportedly warned that there would be
'#SeverePushback' against any attempt to impose new cuts to the popular program that provides health insurance to #LowIncome and #disabled Americans.

"Politico's Benjamin Guggenheim and Meredith Lee Hill also reported that there is little appetite for another bitter legislative battle given the work House Republicans are facing when they return to Washington after Labor Day. They wrote: 'A major fight over government funding looms, as well as the expiration of the #ACATaxCredits — which could lead to drastic hikes in some Americans’ #HealthInsurance premiums.' "

#Trump’s #megabill may force your local grocery store to close

By Nathaniel Meyersohn
July 28, 2025

Excerpt: "Wright’s Market has been a fixture of Opelika, Alabama, a town of around 30,000 near Auburn University, since the 1970s. The supermarket relies on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (#SNAP) for roughly one-third of sales.

"SNAP is a 'big piece of what we do,' said owner Jimmy Wright, who has worked at the store since he was 12 and bought it almost 30 years ago. 'We see very hardworking people who are using this program to try to feed their families and pay rent.'

" 'SNAP, formerly known as #FoodStamps, is the largest #AntiHunger program in America. Recipients receive, on average, about $6.16 a day, according to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities.

"But President Trump’s #OneBigBeautifulBill Act makes the largest cuts to food stamps in the program’s 86-year history, jeopardizing assistance for more than 42 million people. It also imperils the program’s role as an economic anchor for grocery stores and communities, particularly in #rural areas, according to #grocers and economists."

New Trump memo ends bond releases for some, could keep migrants detained for years

Story by Angeline McCall, July 15, 2025

"A new Trump administration memo calls to eliminate bond releases for immigrants who crossed the border without authorization, potentially keeping them in Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention for years while their cases progress through the immigration system, according to advocates who work with detained immigrants.

"The policy change means immigrants who entered the country without authorization will no longer be eligible for bond releases and must remain in custody until their cases are resolved — a process that can take years.

" 'We found out this morning that it was happening,' said Andrea Loya, Executive Director of Casa de Paz, an organization that assists people released from ICE custody.

"The memo represents a significant shift from previous practices where many immigrants could be released on bond while awaiting their immigration hearings. Loya said her organization currently sees people released after stays ranging from just a few weeks to over a year, depending on their case complexity, access to legal representation and financial resources.

"Under the new policy, those released on bond will no longer be able to 'go back home' to their families and 'establish some sort of normalcy again and keep fighting for their cases,' Loya said.

"The extended detention periods could stretch for years, according to Loya, who noted that 'some of these people will fight for years because they will not be going back home' due to safety concerns in their countries of origin.

" 'What I don't think a lot of people understand is that some of these people, going back to their home countries is a literal death sentence,' she said.

"Loya characterized the policy as a strategy to pressure immigrants to abandon their legal cases.

" 'So this is definitely a measure to push people to get back and sign a deportation order or push them into just giving up and going back to whatever home country means,' she said.

"The policy change aligns with broader Trump administration immigration enforcement priorities. The One #BigBeautifulBillAct allocates $45 billion to expand #ICEDetention capacity to 100,000 beds, roughly double the current capacity.

"Loya described the detention system as 'monetized' and 'privatized,' suggesting the new policy serves multiple purposes for the administration.

" 'I think it's a push to make people give up in their cases and also, without the understanding that some people can't give up because going back to their home countries is a death sentence,' she said."

#Trump Cuts to #PublicMedia Threaten #NativeAmerican Stations That Protect #Culture & #PublicHealth, Issue Alerts

July 18, 2025

"We speak to Loris Taylor, president of #NativePublicMedia, about the Trump administration’s drastic #defunding of public media and its impact on tribal nations. Fifty-nine #TribalRadioStations and one tribal #TelevisionStation that depend on federal funding will be among the first to face possible closure, putting some of the essential services that #PublicBroadcasting provides, including warning systems for missing #IndigenousWomen and girls, at risk.

"Taylor shares how Native-led public media helps preserve #IndigenousLanguages and helped keep communities informed during the peak of the COVID-19 #pandemic. She fears that without these same resources and 'with the #ClimateCrisis increasing, [we] are going to be operating on the margins of information and are not going to have real lifesaving information available to our citizens when they need it most.' 'If I wasn't here, people could die': Trump public media cuts could hit rural America

Thomas Copeland, BBC World Service
July 15, 2025

"A gale-force storm hit north-eastern #Alaska last winter. Residents of #Kotzebue, a town of about 3,000, are used to polar conditions, so Desiree Hagan still had to get to work.

" 'The snow was so intense you could not see in front of you,' Ms Hagan remembers. 'I was walking backwards to work.'

"Ms Hagan is a reporter at a public radio station, #KOTZ, which airs across Kotzebue and its 12 surrounding villages.
She also happens to be the only US journalist stationed inside the Arctic Circle, so as the storm intensified, she had to get on the air.

" 'It's go time, I have to report on this,' recalls Ms Hagan. 'We have to make sure we know where people can go. Oh, the electric is out. Okay, now the airport is flooded.'

" 'Winter is not a joke here, it is life and death,' she tells the BBC. 'As a reporter I try not to make emotional statements like, if I wasn't here, people could die, but that is a reality.'

"On the other side of the country in #WashingtonDC, however, a historic vote could bring federal support for KOTZ to an end.

"The Senate must decide by the end of the week whether to claw back $1.1bn (£800m) from the #CorporationForPublicBroadcasting, the body that distributes federal funding to public radio and television stations.

"While the #PublicMedia cuts are part of a broad spending package, which includes requests to rescind $8.3bn from the United States Agency for International Development and other foreign aid programmes, they are especially dear to President Donald Trump, who frequently accuses media of bias.

"The president has now threatened to pull his support from any Republican senator who does not support the cuts.

" 'It is very important that all Republicans adhere to my Recissions Bill and, in particular, DEFUND THE CORPORATION FOR PUBLIC BROADCASTING (PBS and NPR), which is worse than CNN & MSDNC put together,' Trump posted on Truth Social Thursday night.

"Executives at National Public Radio (#NPR) and the Public Broadcasting System (#PBS) reject accusations of bias and say they abide by all journalistic standards.

"Republican voters, however, are about three times less likely than Democrats to consume or trust news coverage from either outlet, according to the Pew Research Center.

"While the cuts will affect national broadcasters like NPR and PBS, more than 70% of federal funding goes to local media stations and about 45% of the stations that received funding in 2023 are in rural areas.

"For half of those rural stations, federal grants made up a quarter or more of their revenue. At KOTZ in Kotzebue, public funding constitutes 41% of its income.

" 'By no means is it assured of being passed in the Senate, where many of the Republican senators represent rural states that really do benefit from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting,' Democratic congressman Dan Goldman, co-chair of the Public Broadcasting Caucus, told the BBC World Service's Weekend programme.

"Republican Senator #LisaMurkowski of Alaska has said she opposes the cuts to public media stations, warning that "what may seem like a frivolous expense to some has proven to be an invaluable resource that saves lives in Alaska".
'Almost to a number, they're saying that they will go under if public broadcasting funds are no longer available to them,' Murkowski told a Senate hearing last month. "

More than 20 states sue Trump administration over frozen #AfterSchoolCare, #SummerPrograms and more.

Some of the withheld money funds after-school and summer programming at Boys & Girls Clubs, the #YMCA or #PublicSchools, attended by 1.4 million children and teenagers nationwide

By BIANCA VÁZQUEZ TONESS
Updated 5:12 PM EDT, July 14, 2025

Excerpt: "At the East Providence summer camp, Aiden, a rising third grader, played tag, built structures with magnetic tiles, played a fast-paced game with the other kids to review addition and subtraction, learned about pollination, watched a nature video and ate club-provided chicken nuggets.

"Veteran teachers from his school corrected him when he spoke without raising his hand and offered common-sense advice when a boy in his group said something inappropriate.

" 'When someone says something inappropriate, you don’t repeat it,' teacher Kayla Creighton told the boys between answering their questions about horseflies and honeybees.

"Indeed, it’s hard to find a more middle-of-the road organization in this country than the Boys & Girls Club.

"Just last month, a Republican and a Democrat sponsored a resolution in the U.S. House celebrating the 165-year-old organization as a 'beacon of hope and opportunity.' The Defense Department awarded the club $3 million in 1991 to support children left behind when their parents deployed for the Persian Gulf. And ever since, the Boys & Girls Club has created clubs on military installations to support the children of service members. Military families can sign up their kids for free.

[...]

"Aiden’s mother has started looking into afternoon child care for September when kids return to school in Rhode Island.

" 'It costs $220 a week,' Reyes said, her eyes expanding. 'I can’t afford that.'

"The single mother and state worker said she’ll probably ask her 14-year-old son to stay home and watch Aiden. That will mean he would have to forgo getting a job when he turns 15 in the fall and couldn’t play basketball and football.

" 'I don’t have any other option,' she said.

"At home, Aiden would likely stay inside on a screen. That would be heartbreaking since he’s thrived getting tutoring and 'learning about healthy boundaries' from the Boys & Girls Club program, Reyes said."

#Maine joins 20 states to challenge #Trump administration funding cuts

by MICHAEL CASEY Associated Press
Wed, June 25th 2025

BOSTON (AP) — "Attorneys general from more than 20 states, including Maine, and #WashingtonDC filed a federal lawsuit Tuesday challenging billions of dollars in funding cuts made by the Trump administration that would fund everything from crime prevention to #FoodSecurity to #ScientificResearch.

"The lawsuit filed in Boston is asking a judge to limit the Trump administration from relying on an obscure clause in the federal regulation to cut grants that don’t align with its priorities. Since January, the lawsuit argues that the administration has used that clause to cancel entire programs and thousands of grants that had been previously awarded to states and grantees.

" 'Defendants’ decision to invoke the Clause to terminate grants based on changed agency priorities is #unlawful several times over,' the plaintiffs argued. 'The rulemaking history of the Clause makes plain that the (Office of Management and Budget - #OMB) intended for the Clause to permit terminations in only limited circumstances and provides no support for a broad power to terminate grants on a whim based on newly identified agency priorities.'

"The lawsuit argues the Trump administration has used the clause for the basis of a 'slash-and-burn campaign' to cut federal grants.

" 'Defendants have terminated thousands of grant awards made to Plaintiffs, pulling the rug out from under the States, and taking away critical federal funding on which States and their residents rely for essential programs,' the lawsuit added.

"The White House's Office of Management and Budget did not immediately respond to a request made Tuesday afternoon for comment.

"#RhodeIsland Attorney General Neronha said this lawsuit was just one of several the coalition of mostly Democratic states have filed over funding cuts. For the most part, they have largely succeeded in a string of legal victories to temporarily halt cuts.

"This one, though, may be the broadest challenge to those funding cuts.

" 'It’s no secret that this President has gone to great lengths to intercept federal funding to the states, but what may be lesser known is how the Trump Administration is attempting to justify their unlawful actions,' Neronha said in a statement. 'Nearly every lawsuit this coalition of Democratic attorneys general has filed against the Administration is related to its unlawful and flagrant attempts to rob Americans of basic programs and services upon which they rely. Most often, this comes in the form of illegal federal funding cuts, which the Administration attempts to justify via a so-called agency priorities clause.'

"#Connecticut Attorney General William Tong said the lawsuit aimed to stop funding cuts he described as indiscriminate and illegal.

" 'There is no ‘because I don’t like you’ or ‘because I don’t feel like it anymore’ defunding clause in federal law that allows the President to bypass Congress on a whim,' Tong said in a statement. 'Since his first minutes in office, Trump has unilaterally defunded our police, our schools, our healthcare, and more. He can’t do that, and that’s why over and over again we have blocked him in court and won back our funding.'

"In #Massachusetts, Attorney General Andrea Campbell said the U.S. Department of Agriculture terminated a $11 million agreement with the state Department of Agricultural Resources connecting hundreds of #farmers to hundreds of food distribution sites while the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency [#EPA] terminated a $1 million grant to the state Department of Public Health to reduce asthma triggers in #LowIncome communities.

" 'We cannot stand idly by while this President continues to launch unprecedented, unlawful attacks on Massachusetts’ residents, institutions, and economy,' Campbell said in a statement."

New #Trump #vaccine policy limits access to #COVID shots

By MATTHEW PERRONE and LAURAN NEERGAARD
Updated 5:01 PM EDT, May 20, 2025

Excerpt: "The nation’s leading pediatrics group said FDA’s approach will limit options for parents and their children.

" 'If the vaccine were no longer available or covered by insurance, it will take the choice away from families who wish to protect their children from COVID-19, especially among families already facing barriers to care,' said Dr. Sean O’Leary of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

"Provisional data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows more than 47,000 Americans died from COVID-related causes last year. The virus was the underlying cause for two-thirds of those and it was a contributing factor for the rest. Among them were 231 children whose deaths were deemed COVID-related, 134 of them where the virus was the direct cause -- numbers similar to yearly pediatric deaths from the flu.

"The new FDA approach is the culmination of a series of recent steps under Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. scrutinizing the use of COVID shots and raising questions about the broader availability of vaccines. It was released two days ahead of the first meeting of FDA’s outside vaccine experts under the Trump."

#GoodShepherd pushes for increase in #MainersFeedingMainers program at state house

By Sierra Whaley
Published: May 13, 2025 at 5:17 PM EDT

AUGUSTA, Maine (WABI) - "Federal cuts have impacted funding for #HungerRelief programs across the state.

"That’s why state representatives gathered at the state house to push for the passage of a bill that could strengthen a 15-year-partnership between the state and Good Shepherd to keep reliable sources alive in this uncertain time.

" 'As our costs are going up and as our funding is going down as we’ve experienced funding cancellations federally, we are looking for a more cost share model with the state and asking for increased state support,' said Heather Paquette, president of Good Shepherd Food Bank.

"The Good Shepherd Food Bank is Maine’s only #FeedingAmerica food bank distributing food from Fort Kent to Kittery.

"They’re urging lawmakers to pass #LD415 sponsored by North Yarmouth Rep. Annie Graham.

"It’s a bill to increase the state’s support for the Mainers feeding Mainers program through Good Shepherd.

"Here’s how it works.

" 'We purchase fresh local produce from 93 farmers throughout the state of Maine from Fort Kent to Kittery and those farmers deliver that fresh produce directly to our pantry partners which serve them to neighbors experiencing food insecurity in the state of Maine,' said Paquette.

"According to Feeding America nearly 200-thousand Mainers are experiencing hunger.

"That includes over 50,000 children.

"Which is why the increase would provide more security for state sources, such as #farmers, to keep those community partnerships active.

"If passed the bill would increase the funding from one million to two million dollars."
