Two trucks with long flatbed trailers and "oversized load" banners carry four rectangular precast-concrete tunnel sections, perhaps 4 feet each. They wait alongside the Amtrak rails for crane crews to be ready to lift them off the trailers and set them near the tunnel site, for a construction blitz planned to begin Tuesday June 3rd.

We're back at the cottage in #PrestonBrook and, last night, took a walk down the #towpath of the #Bridgewater #Canal to the north portal of the #tunnel.

In almost the middle of nowhere it was a surprise to find a #bookexchange facility. I really wish I'd taken more notice of it, like how far it is from the tunnel mouth and whether it can be seen from a passing #boat. Not that I can imagine any passing boat would rush to moor and examine the bookcase's contents.

If you live in, or near #Oakland, CA, you probably know #TunnelRoad, the road that climbs the west side of the canyon where #Highway24 goes through its four bores, or #tunnels. It was the site of the Oakland firestorm of 1991. If you're a #cyclist, you've ridden it. Perhaps you've seen the historical marker, shaded by an oak, about half-way up the hill, commemorating the now-closed #KennedyTunnel, or hiked in the eastern end of #Sibley Volcanic Regional Preserve and discovered that there's another, eastern #OldTunnel Road which terminates on the hillside there. Here's the 1879 origin story of the road's name, the construction of the road that leads to either end of the #tunnel, along with a bit of snark. KENNEDY TUNNEL OPENED IN 1903, THE TIMBER-LINED KENNEDY TUNNEL WAS THE FASTEST ROUTE BETWEEN OAKLAND AND LAFAYETTE SAVING FOUR HOURS OF DRIVING AROUND THE SAN PABLO RESERVOIR. IN 1914, IT WAS WIRED FOR LIGHTS AND RENAMED THE BROADWAY TUNNEL. IN 1937, AFTER THE COMPLETION OF THE CALDECOTT TUNNEL THE KENNEDY TUNNEL WAS CLOSED TO MOTOR CARS, ALLOWING ONLY FOOT, HORSE AND TWO-WHEELED TRAFFIC. IN 1947. THE TIMBER LINED TUNNEL WAS PERMANENTLY CLOSED DUE TO REPEATED CAVE-INS AND RISING MAINTENANCE COSTS. Aberdeen Tunnel, part of Route 1, is a dual-carriageway tunnel linking Happy Valley and Wong Chuk Hang near Aberdeen on the Hong Kong Island, Hong Kong. It shortens the travel time between Wong Chuk Hang and Causeway Bay of the Hong Kong Island. It connects the Wong Chuk Hang Road and Canal Road Flyover in the Hong Kong Island. The toll plaza is at the Wong Chuk Hang end.

The bike tunnel below the main station was finally inaugurated yesterday, along with parking space for 1200 bikes. This bike path follow a tunnel that was initially built for a highway that was never built.
