"Please let me know if you are local."
:catthinking:
Yeah, with the only geographical information being that you are in the same time zone as New York, it is going to be super easy to know whether I'm local to you or not.
The New York time zone is a large slice of the Earth, ya know...

A resource I've sometimes found useful during times of need:
Experienced engineers (& others) can register as tutors & charge by the hour for Zoom sessions. Sometimes you can arrange a recurring series with a student or freelance gigs.
One Python/JS engineer I knew was able to make her entire living off of it. At least it can help make ends meet.

I don't even remember how to make or use slope fields... 😩
It probably would come back fast.
That's one of my problems with some of the math that I'm supposed to know (because I'm a tutor).
I use derivation and integration often enough that they are committed to memory.
However, there are things that I've learned that I never get to use, like slope fields.
I just saw an ad for tutoring Algebra 1. In it the parent was talking about how the tutoring should aim to get their daughter into virology, get ER experience and go to a prestigious medical school.
Algebra 1.
I get it. I've helped nurses and guys in the trades pass math requirements that they needed for professional goals.
Fine.
But all this talk of what their daughter would do, if only she got the right Algebra 1 tutoring is a huge red flag.
Toxic parents.
I'll note that there was zero talk about what the girl actually wanted to do with her life. It wasn't "she's passionate about virology." It really felt like parental projection.
K2 has broken free from one of the big tutoring platforms and is now offering his services via his own website - math and English tutoring, with a focus on elementary and middle school levels, but also higher, if needed. Hey fedi, to people who are okay with pirating school textbooks, can you help me find this outrageously priced essential book for IB teachers?
ISBN: 978-1382048538
Amazon Link:
It has to be grade 4-5 as I tutor a 5th grade student soon and need to learn how IB board assesses its students, thank you!

"Use the alternative form of the derivative..."
LOL wut??? The derivative has an "alternative form???"
A calculus student presented a question to me that started like this. I never heard of any alternative form, so I searched for it.
I landed on this page:
The first comment under the question is: "What do you understand by "the alternative form of the derivative"? This is not standard terminology."
Yeah, I agree. This is not standard terminology.
Ultimately, I agree with the person who answered the question at the Stackexchange site, but why not just say: "use this definition of the derivative to find..." and give the formula????
Seen in a tutoring job ad:
"[My son] is a varsity rower, so efficiency and focus matter."
Gotcha... so I'll be efficient and focused for your son but not for other students.
(Newsflash: I'm always focused and efficient, varsity rower or not.)
Pro-tip, from a math tutor:
When you post a tutoring job ad, be as specific as possible with your ad.
Someone posted an ad.
I replied immediately.
They came to me 1.5 hours after their posting with requirements that were not in the original ad.
Did they conceive of those requirements between having posted the and contacting me?
I doubt it.
They just underspecified in the ad, and corrected that when they decided to talk to me.
We could have saved us both some time if the specifications had been clearly laid out in the original ad, because, guess what,? I would have passed.
Their requirements were legitimate, but I just don't work the way they want. I also have to say that if I had known those requirements, I would have asked for more money. It seems to me what they wanted was more a *teacher* than a *tutor*.
So I passed. I was polite. I did not berate them... but I passed on the offer.
Drats! I've just seen a job posting for tutoring that requires algebra and Mandarin.
I knew I should have kept up my Mandarin. 😭
(I'm joking. Even at my best, I was intermediate in Mandarin. i had enough of it to get around Taiwan but not nearly enough to deal with tutoring math in that language.)
Seen in a job ad:
"I'd like a tutor who can help."
(This was the entire ad.)
:catthinking:
It is very important to specify that you'd like a tutor *who can help*. Otherwise, you might get a useless tutor, who just sits there and goes, "bflrpbflrpbflrpbflrpbflrpbflrp..."

why do people put up new tutoring job ads on this day of all days???????
Yes, I need the work, but can we have one day off during the year?
