La curiosa Sociedad Americana de Aficionados a Observar Muchachas
En 1967, la revista Kena publicó un artículo sobre una organización tan peculiar como singular: la Sociedad Americana de Aficionados a Observar Muchachas (The American Society of Girls Watchers). Esta agrupación, que buscaba regular el comportamiento de sus miembros mediante un «código ético», resulta hoy una interesante ventana a las costumbres y dinámicas sociales de aquella época.
Un reglamento inusual
Con más de 2,500 miembros, la sociedad contaba con un presidente, una mesa directiva y un conjunto de reglas que, en apariencia, pretendían mantener cierta discreción. Entre estas normas se incluían:
- Prohibido lanzar piropos o silbidos.
- Evitar gestos cómplices, como codazos o señas, para llamar la atención sobre alguna chica.
- No mirar con lascivia.
La sociedad incluso realizaba «estudios» para identificar los lugares más idóneos para observar mujeres. Según sus boletines, la Quinta Avenida de Nueva York, entre las calles 50 y 59, era la zona más «fructífera» para esta actividad.
La moda y el cambio cultural
A pesar de su aparente organización, el club enfrentó desafíos internos con el cambio cultural y de moda de los años 60. La llegada de la minifalda y el estilo andrógino popularizado por la modelo Twiggy generaron tensiones dentro de la sociedad.
El presidente, Raymond P. Bauer, Jr., anunció su renuncia argumentando que las nuevas tendencias complicaban mantener el espíritu de la agrupación. Según él, «Después de que Twiggy se convirtió en símbolo de sensualidad, todas las chicas intentan parecerse a ella… pero Twiggy parece un niño».
Esto no solo refleja los cánones de belleza en transformación, sino también cómo estos cambios impactaban en la percepción masculina de la época, acostumbrada a roles más tradicionales.
Un retrato de su tiempo
La Sociedad Americana de Aficionados a Observar Muchachas es un claro reflejo de las costumbres y actitudes sociales de los años 60. Si bien hoy puede parecer insólito o incluso humorístico, este tipo de iniciativas muestra cómo los cambios culturales, como la moda, el empoderamiento femenino y la redefinición de los roles de género, podían desestabilizar estructuras que se daban por sentadas.
Sin juzgar demasiado, mirar al pasado a través de estas historias ayuda a comprender cómo se vivía en aquella época y cómo la moda y las normas sociales estaban íntimamente conectadas con los valores culturales.
