[LIVE] #NationalDayOfMourning 2025, (27 November 25 @ 12pm ET)

"Since 1970, Indigenous people & their allies have gathered at noon on Cole's Hill in Plymouth to commemorate a National Day of Mourning on the US Thanksgiving holiday. Many Native people do not celebrate the arrival of the Pilgrims & other European settlers. Thanksgiving Day is a reminder of the genocide of millions of Native people, the theft of Native lands and the erasure of Native cultures. Participants in National Day of Mourning honor Indigenous ancestors and Native resilience. It is a day of remembrance and spiritual connection, as well as a protest against the racism and oppression that Indigenous people continue to experience worldwide."

ORIENTATION FOR NATIONAL DAY OF MOURNING 11/27/25

WHAT IS NATIONAL DAY OF MOURNING?

An annual tradition since 1970, National Day of Mourning is a solemn, spiritual and highly political day. Many of us fast from sundown the day before through the afternoon of that day (and have a social after NDOM so that participants in NDOM can break their fasts). We are mourning our ancestors and the genocide of our peoples and the theft of our lands. NDOM is a day when we mourn, but we also feel our strength in action and solidarity.

WHEN AND WHERE IS DAY OF MOURNING?

Thursday, November 27, 2025 (U.S. "thanksgiving" day) at Cole's Hill, Plymouth, Massachusetts, 12 noon SHARP. Cole's Hill is the hill above Plymouth Rock in the Plymouth historic waterfront area. The rallies and marches will last until approximately 3 pm.

WILL THERE BE A MARCH?

Yes, there will be a march through the historic district of Plymouth. Plymouth agreed, as part of the settlement of 10/19/98, that UAINE may march on National Day of Mourning without the need for a permit as long as we give the town advance notice.

PROGRAM

Although we very much welcome our non-Native supporters to join us, it is a day when only Indigenous people speak about our history and the struggles that are taking place throughout the Americas. Speakers are by invitation only. This year's NDOM will be livestreamed from Plymouth.

Note that NDOM is not a powwow or commercial event, so we ask that people do not sell merchandise or distribute leaflets at the outdoor program. We will have UAINE t-shirts available for sale following the march.
We also ask that you do not eat (unless you must do so for medical reasons) at the outdoor speak-out and march out of respect for the participants who are fasting.
Dress for the weather!

SOCIAL

There will be box lunches available for distribution after the march (turkey and vegan), but we will not have a full sit-down social.

#Solidarity with #IndigenousStruggles throughout the world!

From #TurtleIsland to #Palestine, #Colonialism is a Crime!

While many supporters will attend in person, we will also Livestream the event from Plymouth.

Analysis: How #AntiTransLaws jeopardize #IndigenousPeoples’ rights, religious expression

by Rosalyn St Pierre, Jun 15, 2023

"In April [2023], Montana’s Republican Gov. Greg Gianforte became one of the latest to sign several new anti-transgender laws, including one that will prevent gender-affirming medical care for minors.

"One thing these new laws do not take into account is that the 12 federally recognized tribes in Montana have historically recognized multiple gender identities, including transgender identities. Most Indigenous peoples recognize multiple gender identities that are believed to be the result of supernatural intervention.

"In this regard, Montana state Rep. Donavon Hawk, a Democrat from Butte who is Crow and Lakota, said, 'It surprises me that this country is only a couple hundred years old, and we are not able to function with #LGBTQ people in our communities.' Indigenous communities have incorporated LGBTQ+ peoples within their societies for centuries.

"As an Indigenous scholar who studies the history and religion of Indigenous peoples, I am troubled by how these new anti-transgender laws might affect religious expression and the rights of Indigenous communities, not just in Montana but across the nation."

#IndigenousPeoples’ Day: #LGBTQ+ films, TV shows, and docs to watch

Bernardo Sim, Mon, October 13, 2025

"Hollywood has had a long history of excluding Indigenous peoples from mainstream media — often turning real stories and individuals into senseless caricatures that are more widely understood by the general public.

"Thankfully, several young #Indigenous writers, directors, actors, musicians, and performance artists have been actively fighting back in recent years to reclaim narratives, be accurately visible, and have ownership of their own stories.

"Though we’re still far from an ideal standard, reflecting on this painful history and looking forward to a more equitable future are great activities to honor Indigenous Peoples’ Day. Below, a list of films, TV shows, and documentaries that center and/or feature LGBTQ+ Indigenous identities."

Rites of Passage: The Strawberry Ceremony

by Jillian Kerr

"Traditionally, the strawberry ceremony is for girls after their first menstrual cycle. However, today it is offered to folks who identify as #TwoSpirit and to those who didn’t have the opportunity to participate as young people, like me. I didn’t have the chance to go through this ceremony decades ago as an adolescent, and I am eagerly looking forward to my own strawberry ceremony experience this year. In anticipation, I researched the strawberry ceremony and talked to those who had already experienced it to learn more."

I enjoyed meeting two spirits artist and muralist Jamie John recently, and picked up a few their prints. I'm glad to have them.

The image features four cards arranged in a 2x2 grid on a textured beige carpet. Each card has a unique color background and a white illustration of a woman dancing, with the text "Dancing Through Life" at the bottom. The top left card has a blue background, the top right card has a green background, the bottom left card has an orange background, and the bottom right card has a pink background. The illustrations on each card are similar, depicting a woman in a flowing dress and boots, with geometric shapes and patterns in the background. The cards are numbered, with the top left card labeled "5/5," the top right "1/10," the bottom left "1/2," and the bottom right "1/10." The artist's signature and the year "2025" are visible on each card.

My first experience of Trans folk in media. Worked for me. I understood at an early age that people could be husbands or wives -- no matter their assigned gender. And yes, when I was in kindgergarten, I was the "husband" to two wives -- one female and one male.

More from #KishaJames' powerful speech at the #NationalDayOfMourning :

We Will Continue

"We will continue to gather on this hill until we are free from this oppressive system -- until corporations and the U.S. military stop polluting the Earth, until we dismantle the brutal apparatus of mass incarceration.

"We will not stop until the oppression of our LGBTQ and Two Spirit siblings is a thing of the past; until unhoused people have homes; until there are no more murdered and missing indigenous women and other relatives; until human beings are no longer deported or locked in cages at the U.S. border -- despite the fact that no one no one is illegal on stolen land; until no person goes hungry or is left to die because they have little or no access to quality health care; until insulin is free; until union busting is a thing of the past.

"We will not stop until the U.S. ends its Colonial occupations of Puerto Rico and the Sovereign Kingdom of Hawaii; until the U.S. stops its warmongering worldwide; until the US ends its interventions in Haiti and repays the billions it stole from the Haitian
people; until the U.S. pays reparations to Black Americans; until land back for Native Nations; until Free Palestine.

"Until then, the struggle will continue -- in the spirit of Crazy Horse, in the spirit of Metacom, in the spirit of Geronimo, above all, to all people who fight and struggle for real Justice.

"We are not vanishing we are not conquered. We are as strong as ever."

In the powwow circle, Indigenous people are ‘dancing for our families, our Elders and our babies’

Jingle dresses, medicine wheel colours and eagle feathers are some of the ways dancers use regalia to tell stories of the land, history and people

Excerpt:
“I like to work on the land and show hunting stories when I dance,” Mary Ann Manatch, a woodland traditional dancer from Wiikwemkoong and Rapid Lake First Nations, says. Their unique dance style also incorporates elements from men’s traditional dance. Manatch said telling stories of animals through dance, connects them to the spirit of those animals.

#NativeAmericans Hold #NationalDayOfMourning on #Thanksgiving

"'Thanksgiving' is a white-washed holiday designed to conceal its true origins of violence, #genocide, #LandTheft, and #ForcedAssimilation," - #IndigenousEnvironmentalNetwork.

Jessica Corbett
Nov 28, 2024

"In contrast with Thanksgiving celebrations across the United States on Thursday, Native Americans held a National Day of Mourning, promoted accurate history, and championed Indigenous voices and struggles.

"Despite rainy conditions, the United American Indians of New England held its 55th annual National Day of Mourning at Cole's Hill in Plymouth, Massachusetts. Kisha James, who is an enrolled member of the Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head (Aquinnah) and also Oglala Lakota, shared how her grandfather founded the event in 1970 and pledged to continue to "tear down the Thanksgiving mythology."

"The past influences the present" and "the settler project" continues with racism, misogyny, and anti-LGBTQ+ discrimination, James told the crowd. "The Pilgrims are not ancient history."

"James took aim at fossil fuel pipelines, oil rigs, skyscrapers, corporations, the U.S. military, mass incarceration, and the criminalization of immigrants, and declared that "no one is illegal on stolen on land."

"Jean-Luc Pierite, a member of the Tunica-Biloxi Tribe of Louisiana and president of the board of directors of the North American Indian Center of Boston who helped organize this year's gathering, told USA Today that "while we are mourning some tragic history but also contemporary issues, we are also expressing gratitude for each [other] and building this community space."

"Coming together as a community for a feast and to express gratitude—that's not something that was imported to this continent because of colonization," Pierite said. "Indigenous peoples have had these practices going back beyond, beyond colonial contact."

This year's event in Plymouth included speeches about the suffering of Palestinians—as Israel wages a U.S. government-backed war on the Gaza Strip that has killed at least 44,330 people, injured 104,933, and led to a genocide case at the International Court of Justice—and of people impacted by extractive industries.

"The message from Indigenous peoples internationally has been consistent: that we need to center the development of traditional ecological knowledge, Indigenous knowledge, and move away from fossil fuel extractive economies," said Pierite. "At this time the world needs Indigenous peoples."

For #TwoSpirits, An Opportunity To Reclaim Acceptance Across #IndianCountry

#KLCC | By Brian Bull
Published November 29, 2018

"The term '#TwoSpirit' in #NativeAmerican culture often describes a person possessing both male and female spirits. And they’ve been around well before the Santa Maria or the Mayflower dropped anchor. And while 'Two Spirit has been used for Indians who identify as gay, bisexual, or transgender…many say there’s more to it than that. KLCC’s Brian Bull explores a community that’s finding its voice again after generations of oppression, prejudice, and oversight.

"This summer, the annual #Powwow in #SiletzOregon presented something subtle…yet powerful.

"A new sign affirming tribal members could compete in the gender category of their preference debuted at this year's annual #SiletzPowWow.

"Lisa Norton, a member of the #ConfederatedTribesOfSiletz Indians, explains.

"'It’s a competition pow-wow, so people dance in categories…traditionally male or female.

"'So one of the things we wanted to do was #ungender that, so we were able to post a sign that said we were an open and affirming pow-wow. And that people could feel free to compete in the category they desired.'

"It was the first time such a sign was posted at the event. This pleased #JackieCloud, a Chippewa who identifies as a 'Two Spirit'.

"'And I also saw Two Spirit individuals out there dancing. And I was like, 'YEAH! Cool!'

"Cloud joined the other dancers.

"'Y’know there’s that twinge of excitement, exhilaration, oh like…it’s okay. And I commented to someone that I was with there at the pow-wow, and she said, 'That’s where we need to be. That’s where we need to be going.'

"'And so I was very proud of the tribe of #Siletz to…to acknowledge that.'"
