UNITED NATIONS (AP) — "The #UNGeneralAssembly voted by a wide margin on Friday to grant new 'rights and privileges' to #Palestine and called on the #UNSecurityCouncil to reconsider Palestine’s request to become the 194th member of the #UnitedNations.
"The world body approved the Arab and #Palestinian-sponsored resolution by a vote of 143-9 with 25 abstentions. The #UnitedStates voted against it, along with #Israel, #Argentina, #Czechia, #Hungary, #Micronesia, #Nauru, #Palau and #PapuaNewGuinea.
"The vote reflected the wide global support for full membership of Palestine in the United Nations, with many countries expressing outrage at the escalating death toll in #Gaza and fears of a major Israeli offensive in #Rafah, a southern city where about 1.3 million Palestinians have sought refuge.
"It also demonstrated growing support for the Palestinians. A General Assembly resolution on Oct. 27 calling for a humanitarian #Ceasefire in Gaza was approved 120-14 with 45 abstentions. That was just weeks after Israel launched its military offensive in response to Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack in southern Israel, which killed 1,200 people.

"While Friday’s resolution gives Palestine some new rights and privileges, it reaffirms that it remains a non-member observer state without full U.N. membership and the right to vote in the General Assembly or at any of its conferences. And the United States has made clear that it will block Palestinian membership and statehood until direct negotiations with Israel resolve key issues, including security, boundaries and the future of #Jerusalem, and lead to a #TwoState solution."

For several years now, it has seemed to me that this should be re-considered:

To me, it seemed, that the settler movement ever creating new 'facts on the ground' was eroding the two state solution, so alternatives needed to be found if no-one was going to evict illegal settlers.

It was the first time a British foreign secretary has stated that the recognition of a #PalestinianState would be “a contribution to a peaceful solution rather than an outcome,” Zomlot said.
“If implemented, the Cameron Declaration would remove Israel’s veto power over Palestinian statehood [&] would boost efforts toward a #TwoState outcome,” Zomlot wrote.
Secretary-General Antonio Guterres told the UN Security Council, “The right of the Palestinian people to build their own fully independent state must be recognised by all – and a refusal to accept the two-state solution by any party must be firmly rejected.”
The alternative of a one-state solution “with such a large number of Palestinians inside without any real sense of freedom, rights and dignity … will be inconceivable”.

The epitome of true intelligence is being able to hold two contrasting ideas in one's head at the same time.(imo) Can't remember who first said that, I'm just borrowing it.
The path to a #TwoState solution has to claim and consider divergent truths.
Not advocating war or bloodshed but my reading of the current phase of the middle east conflict is that #Israel needs to feel a LOT more pain before they can be dragged to negotiations for a genuinely permanent solution

And no, this is not a good day for the Palestinians. Nobody knows how many innocent Gaza residents will be killed by the time this is over. (as well as the hundreds of Israeli bystanders already killed/ kidnapped)
The conclusion remains: only negotiations leading to a #TwoState solution can stop the killing.
