Can walls of #oysters protect shores against #hurricanes? #DARPA wants to know.
#Tyndall Airforce base will test a new way to protect shorelines from intensified waves and storm surges: a 50m array, made up of three chevron-shaped structures each weighing about 46,000lbs, can take 70% of the oomph out of waves, according to tests. But this isn’t your grandaddy’s #seawall. It’s specifically designed to be colonized by oysters, some of nature’s most effective wave-killers.

@dermotryanie If I have seen further it was by peering through 's ®rocksalt windows.

A portrait of SellaTheChemist peering through the rock salt windows that he used when he demonstrated the "diathermancy" of different gases and in doing so establishing why water and CO2 are greenhouse gases.

John Tyndall was the first person to measure the ability of gases to absorb heat, and was the first to prove the greenhouse effect of earth’s atmosphere. #Poetry #Science #History #AtmosphericScience #GreenhouseEffect #Tyndall (sharpgiving.com/thebookofscien)

Illustration of thermal pathways affecting our climate. Sunlight enters, some is absorbed in the atmosphere; clouds lose less heat to space than toward the ground; heat rising from the earth is mainly absorbed in the atmosphere; heat circulates between earth and atmosphere.

Aluminum gallium nitride (Al,Ga)N holds promise for efficient deep light emitters but unfortunately current devices suffer from low . We offer an explanation: Our simulations reveal disorder-induced transport in wells. But radiative and non-radiative recombination increase both!

#OTD John Tyndall, #Irish experimental #Physicist, died.

In 1859, he discovered the #Greenhouse effect - 3 years after the American #Scientist, Eunice Foote.

Tyndall is #Remembered for learning why the #Sky is #Blue: #Light scattering through #Molecules suspended in the #Atmosphere creates the #Color, which is sometimes referred to as #Tyndall #Blue.
