Turkey is now officially worked off.

We rode a really nice but demanding 15.7 mile road bike ride from Natural Bridges in Santa Cruz CA up beyond the University of California at Santa Cruz this morning with the Tri Club. An 825 foot vertical climb from the coast to the top turn around really catches one’s attention. But the ride back down is well worth the climb.

We’re reasonably lucky in Santa Cruz county to have a number of nice bike routes with a wide variation, from hills, to coastal routes, to rides through the agricultural fields. Santa Cruz has a lot of work to do to improve marked bike lanes, but it is getting steadily better

I'm getting flashbacks to 1998 when I did a short tour of #CALphysics for undergrad. (I went with computer science at #UCSC instead.) The article briefly mentions the importance of keeping up with programming languages, for #physicists, and I was thinking CS would help either way.

"Sullivan, a PhD candidate in the environmental science department, received a “Notice of Intent to Dismiss” signed by Campus Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor (CP/EVC) Lori Kletzer on Aug. 5, 2024. This notice came after her participation in last spring’s academic student workers strike.

Jess Fournier, a UC Santa Cruz graduate worker in the feminist studies department and one of the organizers of the Jan. 23 “Hands off Summer” rally spoke about the protesters’ goal.

“The university is trying to make an example of her so that other people will be afraid to organize, afraid to talk to their coworkers, afraid to strike,” said Fournier in an interview with City on a Hill Press at the rally. “We’re trying to make sure that doesn’t happen. If you’re a worker, and you stand up for yourself, everybody will have your back.”"
