#Denver to hit 100 degrees as heat surges to new heights in central US later this week

The #HeatWave in the central United States will occur around the time of the year when the sun is highest in the sky and can make for sweltering to dangerous conditions.

By Alex Sosnowski, AccuWeather senior meteorologist

Published Jun 15, 2025

"The hottest weather of the season so far will build over the central United States later this week with widespread highs in the 90s Fahrenheit and some 100-degree readings in store from the Rockies to the Mississippi Valley, AccuWeather meteorologists say."

[...]

"Many locations will easily experience their hottest weather of the year so far. St. Louis, for example, has not yet hit 90 degrees this year as of June 15. After a brief taste of 90-degree weather on Tuesday, from late this week into the following week, highs well into the 90s are forecast. "

Awhile back, I posted about the NSF National Center for Atomspheric Research's beautifully #RetroWeb #USwx site. On a hunch, I decided to see if their old Java METAR viewer was still up, despite the link to it having been removed.

...IT'S STILL THERE! AND IT STILL WORKS! 🤯

So, remember a couple of weeks ago when I posted about visiting the #AtlanticOcean in #Maine, and the water was very warm? I was *not* imagining it!

#Atlantic #HurricaneSeason is almost here, and conditions are primed for 'rapid intensification'

How many hurricanes will there be this year? Will this season be worse than 2024? AccuWeather meteorologists have the answers to these questions and more ahead of the official start of the Atlantic hurricane season on June 1.

"One of the biggest factors for tropical development in 2025 is the abundance of warm water available to fuel storms. 'The water temperatures across most of the Atlantic are above average for this time of the year,' AccuWeather Lead Hurricane Expert Alex DaSilva said. 'They're not quite as warm as what we saw last year and in 2023, but they're still well, well above average.'

"Waters are expected to stay warm throughout most of the hurricane season, which will prime storms for explosive development. "

There are a few blue spots (representing normal or cooler than normal water temperatures), but most of the Atlantic Ocean is in yellow (slightly higher than normal water temperatures), with some spots near the East Coast of the United States in red and orange -- indicating very high water temperatures.

'Unheard-of' Storm Brings Months of Rain to 2 States

Story by Anna Skinner, May 5, 2025

"An 'unheard-of' storm has flooded parts of southern Oklahoma and northern Texas after dumping 14 inches of rain in some cities over seven days.

"Two cities in #Oklahoma and one in #Texas broke their April rainfall records after receiving months' worth of rain during the unusually wet spring storms.

"The record levels come after more than a week of rain brought a deluge to parts of Oklahoma and Texas. Although the heavy precipitation helped remedy drought across the region, it also sparked severe impacts, including rising river waters that have now been flooding for more than a week.

"Weather warnings of dangerous #floodwaters remain in place across the region, with some not expiring until 'further notice.' The floodwaters have endangered livestock, closed roads, and inundated #farmland."

At least 3 dead, 500,000 without power as violent #derecho tears through central, eastern US

By Monica Danielle, AccuWeather Managing Editor
Published Apr 30, 2025

"A line of severe thunderstorms evolved into a derecho Tuesday evening, bringing destructive wind gusts across parts of the Ohio Valley and interior Northeast, leading to at least three deaths and power outages for hundreds of millions. By Wednesday afternoon at least 500,000 customers were still without power, down from around 700,000, with a majority of outages occurring in Pennsylvania.

"Some of the strongest impacts were reported in southeastern Ohio and western Pennsylvania, where straight-line wind gusts reached 80 mph — stronger than many low-end tornadoes but across a much wider area. Officials said the storms tore off roofs, uprooted trees in saturated soil and brought down power lines throughout the region.

" 'The line of storms formed near Indianapolis and continued advancing eastward, bringing widespread tree and power line damage to western and central Pennsylvania,' AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Alan Reppert said.

" 'Wind gusts in some areas were nearly 80 mph. For some communities, this derecho could be a once-in-10-year or even a once-in-20-year event.' "

Big March storm fans #wildfires and flips trucks as forecasters fear weekend #tornado outbreak

By RUSS BYNUM and SEAN MURPHY
Updated 9:02 PM EDT, March 14, 2025

"Tornadoes likely amid storm outbreak

"The Storm Prediction Center said fast-moving storms could spawn twisters and hail as large as baseballs Friday, but the greatest threat would come from straight-line winds near or exceeding hurricane force, with gusts of 100 mph (160 kph) possible.

"A #TornadoWatch was issued until 11 p.m. for central and eastern #Missouri, including St. Louis, as well as parts of #Illinois and #Arkansas.

"The National Weather Service said it observed an evening tornado in the south-central Missouri city of #Grovespring.

"Other areas at risk included parts of #Iowa, #Kentucky, #Tennessee and #Mississippi.

"About 47 million people faced an enhanced to moderate severe storm threat from Madison, #Wisconsin, to Birmingham, #Alabama.

"Forecasters grew increasingly worried that intense thunderstorms farther south will likely bring an even greater tornado threat Saturday.

"The Storm Prediction Center said parts of #Mississippi including Jackson and Hattiesburg and areas of #Alabama including Birmingham and Tuscaloosa will be at a high risk. Severe storms and tornadoes are also possible across eastern #Louisiana, western #Georgia, central #Tennessee and the western #Florida Panhandle.

"'We have a lot of confidence that we most likely will have a tornado outbreak tomorrow,' Storm Prediction Center meteorologist Evan Bentley said in an online briefing."
